Title: CP Paint job questions
Post by: Jefferson on October 21, 2009, 06:52:28 pm
I've sifted through the forums and formulated a plan of attack for my new CP, just wanted to have it confirmed in a new topic.
(my project thread:http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=95439.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=95439.0))

Youll see on that link, my CP is 1" thick and the top edge rounds down (where the players bellies are) so T molding and CP art down the 'edges' is out. I want it black, hardwearing, and easily cleaned (I assume fingerprints are inevitable.) The CP is very nice and smooth already so I don't need to disguise any eye-sores.

PLAN
with fine foam mini-roller:
Prime with Kilz, sand
Prime with Kilz, sand
black semi-gloss, sand
black semi-gloss, sand
acrylic lacquer top coat

I've also heard black enamel paint is nice for a hard shell, then I'm under the impression lacquer isn't necessary?

I don't care about 'piano finish.' I hear too glossy invites smears and smudges. Really any hard paint that acts like laminate (sigh. next time.) I'll be happy with.

What say you guys?

well.. im not very knowledgeable about paints but wouldn't you be worried about it wearing?

i mean you'd be surprised just how abrasive a persons skin can be.. wrists, arms, i think it would wear pretty quickly.

but maybe im wrong, actually i hope i am because im going to be in a similar situation soon.

I guess my thing is like, I can't use lexan, or any polycarbonate overlays or laminates, and need to discern some sort of hard shell I can apply in a roller. I'm looking into polyethylene right now

I am not sure if you considered this, but I used a laminate (arborite), in a black matte colour, for my entire cab.  It is the same material used in countertop applications.  It is extremely durable, but a bit costly.  It applies with contact cement and can be trimmed off with a flush-cut router.
