I have a weird problem, 2 of the buttons for player 2 on my control panel don't work in games. In any of the fighting games that use 6 buttons like MK, the 5 and 6 butons don't do anything in the game. I have an i-pac 28 input which i know is wired properly because when not in a game and you press the buttons the keys that they are associated with work. The jumper on the i-pac is set to mame and it is connected via usb to my computer.
Any ideas?

How old is your ipac? I heard some of the old batch didn't work right? I dunno besides that!

I've actually had this problem a few times, and I use an X-Arcade encoder at the moment. I had your EXACT problem, buttons 5 and 6 stop working on Player 2.
What it was for me was Mame itself. I went into the settings for Mame and saw that Player 2 button 5 and 6 weren't assigned. I thought, "Weird." So I assigned them, and everything was cool. Then I extracted version .71 overtop of version .70, and the buttons stopped working again. So I just reassigned them again. Right now everything is fine, but I have a hunch that when .72 comes out, and I upgrade, I'll have to do the same thing.
So, first things first, go into the Mame config and see if the buttons are not assigned. If that happens to be the case, let me know, cause I'd be interested to see if anyone else was having the same problem I had.

TheGameAh has the right of it - happened to me...I was panicing for a few minutes 'til I figured it out. Check your ctrlr files.

I got my i-pac about 2 months ago, just noticed the problem recently when a friend and I tried to play Marvel vs capcom and he couldn't change characters cuz the 5 & 6 buttons don't work while playing.
I'll check the mame config when I get home tonight to see what 5 and 6 are set too
thanks

I had a similar issue with Mame, but instead of the two buttons not being assigned in MAME, they were assigned to different letters than they were "supposed" to be assigned to. Fixed it and all was right with the world again.

Just wanna make sure I do this right, its the std.ini file that needs to be changed right?
Its the only file i could find that has anything to do with the buttons.

Just start up any game in MAME, hit TAB then go into your generic MAME settings and change the PLAYER 2 buttons 5 and 6 to be what they should be ("I" and "K")
