Title: Horizontal vs Vertical - How to decide
Post by: finbom on October 19, 2009, 12:16:03 am
Hi all,

Very inspiring forum, so glad I found it.
I have started to build my very first arcade, and ran into a dead stop...
I am building a one-player machine, scaled down. (Using ideas from Bella's arcade  :applaud:
And I have one 19" LCD monitor that I will use.
I had never reallythought abut it but just had in my mind to mount the display horizontal.. But suddenly started to think about it...
This was clearly something I not thought enough of when planning...
But I'm wondering if maybe vertical mounting would be best...
Now, I am very aware that I should think of what games primary will be played.
And it is Mame and a Commodore 64 emulator that will be running on a computer.

I just wanted to see with you pro's in this forum on how to think. Especially when I can't decide.  :banghead:

Kind regards, Magnus Finbom

What are your favorite games?

A Commodore 64 emulator is not going to like a vertical orientation very much.

I love both horiztonal and vertical games - BUT, at least in using 27" monitors, I am more comfortable with vertical games displayed horizontally (where they end up being about what they would be on a 19" monitor), whereas horizontal games displayed on a vertical monitor seem smaller than they would be on a 19" monitor. But, you know, I don't prefer skinny girls, either......

Hi all,

Yes, I am aware that there is not straight answer to my question. It is individual...
But as most ppl say. Vertical games are better on HOrizontal then the other way around.
I just wanted to hear some words before proceding with my construction. :)

Thanks for some kind words.

Regards, Magnus Finbom

The best is to make two cabinets, one for vertical games and another for horizontal. :)

Hehe, I plan to make a Donkey Kong replica, but using Mame and a 20" LCD. Since I will also make it with a 4-way stick, the selection of games naturally limits itself to a small handful of early classics.

I guess my next project after that would be a C64 cabinet, horizontal display, 2 x 8-way sticks and more buttons (want all Function keys and perhaps a few more). This will make it a natural Mame candidate as well.

I guess the only option other than that is to have a very large monitor.

First check what type of panel your LCD has:
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/panelsearch.htm (http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/panelsearch.htm)
or
http://www.flatpanelshd.com/panels.php (http://www.flatpanelshd.com/panels.php)

If it is TN, then horizontal it is (vertical will look ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- then).
With PVA or IPS you can do both.

i would advise 2 take a 4:3 sips pva panel instead of 5:4 if possible. u may also consider mounting the panel inside a wooden sqare bezel . the advantage would be an easy orientation flip . if the cab is well constructed u be able 2 tate the screen in less than 30 seconds if needed . open panel , take out the glas or plexi screencover , pull screen , flip and put it back .

i adapted something i saw here in byoac for one of my cocktail tables. for upright cabinets  i recommend a fingerhole for easy takeout.
