Title: Recommend a joystick for a dedicated Daphne cabinet?
Post by: driph on October 12, 2009, 10:07:58 pm
Currently in the process of bringing an Interstellar Laser Fantasy cabinet back to life as a dedicated Daphne machine, that'll be running the currently supported assortment of laserdisc titles.

While I'll be keeping the exterior as cosmetically original as possible, there is one minor hangup... Interstellar has a funky joystick. It's the Gorf-style shell on a a unique assembly: up/down movement has been replaced with a side-to-side twist movement (that isn't even particularly effective, ingame).

I'll be swapping the stick out, but I'm wondering what ya'll would recommend, especially those of you that have logged some decent time in the laserdisc games...  Should I find and rig a standard 8way flight stick, matching Astron Belt, Cobra Command, etc, or go with a Wico style 8way stick, where it'd match the most commonly played games like Dragon's Lair and Cliff Hanger?

(I'm not too worried about losing the trigger button, as the Interstellar CP has two buttons on either side for the player)

And for those that are curious, here's what the stock stick is like... did any other title use this sort of setup?

Looks like a regular ol' flight stick from the top...

But underneath... two leaf switches for horizontal movement, plus the twist mechanism:

I think you're going to have to go with an adjustable 4-way / 8-way of some kind. You're just not going to be able to play the 4-way games with an 8 way stick.  So often, I die in Dragon's Lair type games and it's hard enough figuring out what happened when I'm not fighting the joystick.

I'm using the Ultimarc 360, and all laser games play great with it.

Driph, check the PM I sent you and contact me.  I have restored six laser games in the last year, and I can shed some light on controller choices.

How about using Encryptor's Tron Restrictor?  I works great for the 4-way cycle stage, but yet also works great with the 8-way stages.

It goes for about $7 and works great.
