Title: CNC Costs?
Post by: RetroDave on October 12, 2009, 01:28:45 pm
I am trying to decide whether to send my cabinet plans to a CNC woodcutting service or just cut it all myself. I'd really like to have it cut professionally, but I can't seem to find ANY information on the cost of the automated cutting services and I don't want to spend all the time converting my sketchup drawing to a machine friendly CAD drawing if I'm just going to cut it by hand. Has anybody here used a CNC service? How much did it cost?

where would you have it cut...?

that would be a good place to ask how much it would cost...

i'd imagine rates would differ by location...and it doesn't really matter what the rates are in boise if you are in michigan...

Thatitalian got a price to have his cab CNC cut here in the UK. They quoted him £160+VAT for a full cab cutout + material supplied.

Looking at your sketch up I would say that your cab should be simple enough to build yourself.

The problem with CNC is that unless you are 100% on the dimensions of the parts and how they will fit together etc then you will probably end up modifying or remaking a few of the parts and by the time that's done you may as well have just done it yourself. Plus you get the 'I made that' factor

Yeah, it's not that complicated a cabinet because I designed it to be cut by me with basic tools. If I go CNC, then I'll be able to do more interesting things with it like have a 3d design etched into the side panels instead of traditional artwork.

Oh yeah, and I live in the 22556 area code, VA, USA - though I am not really looking for a specific quote, more a general idea of what this board's members typically pay.

Check out www.talkshopbot.com (http://www.talkshopbot.com) to find out a rough price.  Go to the forum and post your question there.

You can also try talking to local sign shops or cabinet shops. Especially if they are slow, the price should be resonable.

I've cut a couple upright mame machines with my CNC machine. One has logo engraved in sides. I do themed machines. Getting ready to cut a couple more. I'm in NW Indiana 46310 if anyones interested.

Very nice work Mike.  Your cab has some very nice clean and crisp looking lines.  Don't you think a Blue Jays logo would look better on the side though?   ;)

Personally, I'm more of a Chicago south-side fan, White Sox.
