i want to get 2 opticals for my 4P cab, mostly for completeness, but i am a diehard SF fan. does the rotary action effect normal gaming at all? does it spin so easy that it could be a nuisance?
im just about to order my happ stuff and wanna make double sure.
and i already know the super vs comp thing, the supers are fine with me, so the diagnal action doesnt matter.

The Happs Optical Rotaries spin about as easily as a NON-rotary spinning joystick...that is, it takes some effort. mine aren't loose and free-spinning, although I'm sure there is a nut or some fixture inside thats making the compression extra tight.
The only dis-advantage is that you've got this large piece of "encoder and bracket" hanging off the end of your joystick inside the CP.....I would somewhat consider that encoder getting slapped around like crazy in your average fighter, perhaps coming lose. The feel of the stick is stiffer than a competition or whatever, but I dont think I'd want it as a stick for fighters.
Consider this: If you really only want a 2 player CP, add an extra spinner joystick (or two) to the CP and wire them both into your interface's inputs for joystick 1 U/D/L/R. This way you can choose which stick you want to use but MAME will see them both as Player 1 stick, etc.
....of course...if you ARE putting 2 extra sticks on your cp.....consider adding a few extra buttons too and just making it a 4 player cp...again, if you haven't yet purchased your encoder and whatnot...
good luck!

My solution is to use a Tornado spinner, and a joystick with a top fire button. The top fire button joystick is here already, and it feels really nice!
I should be able to play Tron and Tempest and all decently well with that setup. Just not some of the games where you did have to turn the joystick. (can't remember names.) Those would only be a problem because they had two or three buttons to work with instead of one - shots, grenades, etc. But I don't think slapping a separate grenade button now and then would be too bad, considering you only have to do it like ten times per life in the game.

I have the Happs tulip-topped sticks and the one thing I dont like is the ULTRA light spring-pressure for the buttons...you could blow on them and they'll actuate :P
But in regards to buttons, say for Discs of tron. I use the happs tulip-top....and my OSCAR Spinner..for shield, I have my P1 Button 1 button within easy reach of my pinky....
I have also considered adding a button near my spinner but right now, I dont need it...

it is a 4 player cab, maybe i could just swap the supers i was gonna put in 3/4 with the rotaries i was putting at 1/2....
but it is all ordered now. cant really wait any longer, need to finish this project. i'll just see how they feel when they get here and decide.

Really? Mine is fairly springy, bout the same as all the other buttons. Is a spring missing somewhere? I think the button should stay popped up even when the microswitch isn't holding it there.
