Title: Anyone recess their joysticks for ergonomics/comfort?
Post by: GaryMcT on October 09, 2009, 09:39:08 pm
My U360's are slightly below normal height from routing and bottom mounting.  I'm tempted to recess them more so they'll feel more like the height of a Defender or Pac-Man stick.  Does anyone else do this for their general purpose sticks?

Man, you'd hate mine. I have 3/4" wood with no routing and I love my U360s the height they're at.

Are yours flush at the top of the wood then?

This may be due to the way you are holding the stick itself.

Most people play the classics (balltops) with a more angled wrist...
while the fighters (Bats) are generally played with the wrists being vertical.

this thread is confusing to me?

Which direction are we talking?  Joystick shaft feels taller or shorter?

I play SF so I have to have my joystick at a regulation height or I will be at a disadvantage when I need to use somebody else's joystick.

For IL competition sticks I like them in 5/8 to 3/4" wood with the double spacer.

For Japanese style sticks I want the joystick shaft to have exactly 23mm between the surface of the CP and the bottom of the ball top.

Anything else just feels off to me.  I play SF with a variety of hand holds depending on the character, but I've taken to using the wine glass hold more often now.

Shorter.  I mostly play classic games.

My U360 is currently mounted like the picture on the right (stealing Bender's image):

First panel I build I bottom mounted my Happ Super's without routing (5/8" thick total).  On my latest controller, I recessed the stick by about 1/8".  That little extra height makes a surprising amount of difference in gripability, imho.

The U360 is based on the Sanwa JLW series joystick so the pic on the right is actually closer to how it is supposed to be mounted.  It doesn't surprise me that it feels better.

Is there a standard for how it should be mounted?  Do you have a link?

I'm contemplating going a little bit lower than what is there.

Thanks!
Gary

I have the left image situation, but a little lower, as the washer is under the top plate. I mounted a small ball on it (30mm) and it plays perfect for the classics.

I'd interesting in knowing as well what the regulation height for a stick would be.

i have two u360 bat tops in my panel.  I originally purchased the longer shafts, so i could bottom mount them on a 3/4" panel.  this put them at almost the exact same height as my old x-arcade sticks when bottom mounted.

however the longer shafts made the throw way too long.  so i installed the standard shafts back in, and kept them bottom mounted.  they feel a little low like this, but they are perfectly playable.  i think i will route out a little to make it higher the next time i redo my panel

Oh, I didn't even think to try a smaller ball top, and I have one for a JLW that I'm going to make a Stargate-style controller panel out of!

I tried it and I think I like it better!  Thanks!

The mounting kit from Ultimarc has the wood inserts to avoid having screws on the top of the panel when bottom mounting.  They are 1/2" thick, so I may go ahead and route 1/4" in the bottom (did 1/2" last time like the picture) so that the ball is 1/4" closer to the surface than it is now and so that I can use the inserts.  I think that'll solve two problems for me. :)

I'll be ordering more small balltops from lizardlick as well!  Thanks for reminding me about that!

corect shaft for balltop is 24-25mm (min 20mm, max 33mm)
for battop is 10-12 (min 8mm, max 15mm)

Gar - you didn't recess them, you raised them - by routing the bottom. I'dve done that if I hadn't gotten longer shafts. I sit down, and bottom-mount using the stock shaft makes my wrist tired. This configuration might be okay standing up, though.
