Title: Sega Master System Controllers - Serial to USB?
Post by: smalltownguy on October 09, 2009, 01:18:49 pm
I see that my SMS controllers match a serial port connection. Can I take advantage of something like this?

Has anyone written a USB driver for this? From what I understand this controller is pretty much an Atari gamepad disguised as a sms controller.

That won't work. Check out Retrousb.com (http://www.retrousb.com/index.php?cPath=21&osCsid=924bd62ec454cbce72a3bab0ce976cc9) instead.

The pinouts are different on the controllers, though.

Yeah... uh no.  You can use the SMS controller on a dozen different systems...

Pinout on the SMS vs the pinout on the RS232 DE9. No one is talking about using the SMS controller on different consoles.

Yeah, I know. I was always swapping out Atari and SMS. That's not what we're talking about, though.

See, someone else gets it.

Not without an adapter of some sort.

Here's a pinout for a Genesis adapter to a parallel port (SMS is compatible with Gen):

SavannahLion and I both said no. Your options are:

USB - www.retrousb.com (the atari adapter)

Parallel - Drew's link above or this http://arcadecontrols.com/Mirrors/www.ziplabel.com/dpadpro/atari.html

I've decided to take a slightly different route with my SMS gamepads, and I will interface them using a hacked USB gamepad.

See my new thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=104501.msg1105656#msg1105656)

Dear god!  This is why I don't visit the consoles forum very often.

Since you seemed to not get it and nobody properly answered your question I'll clue you in.  SMS pads are NOT serial pads. They are direct pin pads (each input gets a pin like on arcade controls).  That goes for atari pads as well as any other 9 pin controller you run across btw.

I know you've moved on, but I'm posting for other's reference.
