Title: Will someone with an AimTrak please confirm?
Post by: Neverending Project on October 08, 2009, 12:18:35 am
Mine arrived today, and the LED bar is not working. I have tried on several different USB ports, and I know it is not working because my camcorder doesn't see any of the LEDs on.

I took a closer look at the PCB and think I found the problem. I believe the USB cable that was shipped with my LED bar has the red and white wires swapped. The red wire carried the 5V and the white doesn't. Looking at Andy's pic on his site it appears that the red wire is suppsed to be on P1 (the pin opposite the black wire).

Mine has the white in P1, and the red next (attached pic). So I think it is not getting 5V. But before I try to swap them, I wanted to confirm with someone else. Can someone check?

Yeah, mine is red on the outside. Swapping should do the trick.
I'm guessing the white and green are data lines, so I doubt anything "fried" from reverse power. Once the wiring is fixed, you should be good to go.

Yup indeed, that did the trick. I was 98% certain, because if you look at the traces on the PCB they are all coming out of two pins on the connector. The red wire was going into a pin with no traces coming out. There is virtually no risk of frying anything, since the USB port puts out a regulated 5V. Even in the worst case (if the + and -5V were reversed) nothing bad would happen - the LEDs just wouldn't light.

But I used a push-pin to pop out the two wires and swapped them. Now I'm in business. Thanks.

I want to wait until I start making real process to my cab before buying this. Just in case a 2.0 version for the lesser skilled do it yourselfers is released while I'm finding excuses not to put this thing together.

But, if you clowns keep making these posts showing that even the problems with this thing are easy to solve I may be tempted to buy yet another piece of hardware that I'll never open to add to my growing pile of assorted arcade bits.

If you bought the AimTrak and never opened it, I'm pretty sure you would get lynched. I've been watching, reading, and researching light gun solutions for years now, and my initial reaction is that this is going to be the future of gun optics.

You could always buy it, leave it lie around for a while, and then just send it to me :D
