Title: A Busy Weekend
Post by: FrizzleFried on October 05, 2009, 09:23:20 am
Man.... this has been a busy weekend for the hobby.  After selling my Star Wars cockpit,  I had a little extra cash for the gameroom (75% went toward the "house/baby" and 25% I kept in the gameroom fund).  After some deliberation I decided to pick up the Battlezone that I'd been trying to get the owner to sell me for $200.00 unsuccessfully for the last 6 months.  He was stuck at $300 and I didn't think it was worth $300.   I still don't,  but it's in my garage... and now I own a Battlezone project:

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/PapaFriz/Battlezone/BZ_JUSTHOME5.jpg) (http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/PapaFriz/Battlezone/BZ_JUSTHOME1.jpg) (http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/PapaFriz/Battlezone/BZ_JUSTHOME2.jpg) (http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/PapaFriz/Battlezone/BZ_JUSTHOME3.jpg)

I need to rebuild the monitor as it has some massive "shaking" going on... the blacklight marquee light and it's components are all missing... and it needs a cleaning REAL bad.  Take a look at what I found when I pulled the monitor:

I already have the cap kit on order from Bob...

Just after I picked this cab up I noticed another pop up on craigslist.  A Wizard of Wor!  And they only wanted $100.  Non-working of course...  but even if the monitor was good only,  it would be worth it.  So I picked it up...

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/PapaFriz/WOW/WOW_JUSTHOME2.jpg) (http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/PapaFriz/WOW/WOW_JUSTHOME1.jpg) (http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/PapaFriz/WOW/WOW_JUSTHOME3.jpg)

The cabinet is in solid condition... bezel is in good shape (but upside down)... marquee is nice... even the control panel is decent.  The game starfield comes up and I can hear the game play "blind"...well,  not blind,  but just a bunch of vertical lines come up.  I am told either one of my RAM boards or the PATTERN GENERATOR board is bad.  I'm in the process of getting this worked out.

...and just when I thought I was done for the day I came across a post on craigslist that read something to the effect of:

Quote
FREE The 1000 Mile Rally game.  Doesn't work.

To which I respond:

Hello,

That's actually a pretty fun game (the 1000 mile rally).  I love to tinker with these old machines... I'd happily take the cab off your hands.  I have a truck,  dolly,  and have moved these cabs many times before.

Let me know if you still have it...

Jon - xxx-xxxx

Thanks!

A few hours later I get this email:

Quote
We received many replies, but yours was the most promising because it sounds like you have all the gear to move it. We'll give you a call tomorrow after we get up around nine to set up the pick-up.  My husband recently had spine surgery, so he won't be able to help you move it, please bring enough manpower to help you move and load.

thanks!
-Shiloh and Michael

After setting up a time the following morning I bring this home:

The game,  indeed,  didn't work.  After checking voltage (it was fine) I figured I'd drop my SFII boardset in to make sure it wasn't a problem with the cab.  When I pulled the boardset I noticed that the two boards weren't completely sandwiched together.  I squeezed them together and powered up to find:

It works!!  25" Dynamo cab...nice looking monitor...FREE!  I even found the freakin' marquee translite inside the cab!

I've also had a recent blitzkrieg of gameroom action. I'm overloaded in projects for sure.

You need to paint that steering wheel housing and pedal STAT!

I believe that pink color is the "proper" color actually...

At least my coindoor isn't pink!

Wow. I figured the powdercoat had just sun faded. My red dolly has turned pink from sun fade. I don't care if it original or not - I'd still paint it.

I'd be really tempted to go against what is original and get rid of the pink too!

Awesome news though, Friz. You filled up that hole in your game room in a hurry. I'm ticked that I won't be able to play your Star Wars next time I'm in town, but you're making up for it a little with the Battlezone. ;)

Hopefully I'll be able to start finding some deals like these starting in a few weeks since I'll have a ton of space to fill. ;D

Real men aren't afraid to drive pink steering wheels.  ;)

I'm so jealous! Free working arcade cabinet in pretty good shape is incredible! So lucky!

The game is super fun... the only complaint I have is... no score... no high score... and the "record times" reset each reboot.

Oh well...

You can't trust photos on KLOV. People upload photos of conversions, old dirty machines, etc... That pink is FADED RED.

Here is the flyer showing red: http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=flyer&db=videodb&id=2203&image=2

I think he still has the upright.

Not when I was there in July, and besides, there's nothing like the cockpit version!

Nice work, Ray! No one wants to see pink parts. ;)

No, he is now searching for an upright again. Shanman's right though. SW upright is only 25% of the fun of the cockpit. But priorities are priorities.

Clearly that is not a photograph on that flyer but a drawing and the color is already leaning to off -red. And alsol, who knows what the scanner did with the colors of that flyer..... :D

Yeah, I rememeber now. He got rid of the upright - I was saying keep it and get rid of the cockpit.

Upright SW is only 25% of the fun once you played a cockpit IMHO.

25%?  I'd put it more at 28.35% myself.

+/- 2% to account for controller condition

Mm, while it's cool to be enclosed an all, the game play is where it's at for me.

There was one on my local CraigsList that was pink.  Red looks much better.  Very nice.
