Title: E-Stick/Happ Universal: are they the same stick?
Post by: TrickyFishy on July 16, 2003, 12:45:14 am
I noticed that the Happ Universal joystick and the Ultimarc E-Stick are similar in appearance and features except the E-Stick comes in other colors besides black.

Are they the same joystick?

I think a previous post (maybe by 1UP) said that both of these sticks had the exact same design.

They are very similiar, but I believe IIRC, that Andy's e-stick has one feature that the universal doesn't...

but i don't remember which it was/is (45 degree switchplate qbert action, perhaps?)

this HAS been asked before... maybe i'll surf the search and see..

If I'm not wrong, Ultimarc's E-stick is the same as Happs's (and Industrias Lorenzo) Universal Joystick. It's a very good joystick, similar to the PSM30 but with round motion of the stick (you don't feel the corners). The spring is not so strong as the psm30, but the throw is quite as short. It's very easy to mount because you don't have to use screws. The plate of this stick is on top of the surface of the panel unlike the rest of the sticks. You have to use a kind of big plastic nut to tighten the stick to the table. Some people don't like the aesthetic of the plate on the table, but I don't think so. The problem is that the part that goes beneath the table takes too much height. Overall I find it a very good stick, much more to my liking than Happs Supers or Competitions.

I'm not sure about a 4-8 restrictor (I dont own this stick). You can see details here:

I actually just picked up an Ulitmarc E-Stick for my desktop controller off of Ebay.  Just put it in last night in place of my Happ Super 8.  Mounts right in the same hole with a threaded collar on the back like the pushbuttons.  Then the base with the microswitches attaches like a bayonet (push and turn).  I wanted to try this stick because of the 4/8 way restrictor that is built into the bottom.  Played around with it last night and works pretty good.  Just had to drill two small key holes in the control panel, to keep the stick from rotating.  Just lift up the control panel and rotate the disk on the bottom for a true restrictor plate feel.  You can also then rotate the entire bottom of the stick (inside the control box) by 45 degrees for playing Q-bert, which worked great.  I like the feel of the Happ Super 8 better, larger handle and heavier feel.  But I like this controller better for my desktop controller, since there isn't room for multiple sticks, gives the best of both worlds imho.
