I got around to documenting my Ms.Pac/Galaga reunion cocktail project (imagine that!).
It features a vertical 19" W-G 7901 monitor w/ ArcadeVGA and the Ms.Pac/Galaga reunion joysticks. This was probably the most fun project I've done in a while. For those who haven't tried it, cocktails are very neat projects! Even after just finishing this one, I almost want to start another. Building is 99% of the fun for me... :)
The project website is www.oscarcontrols.com/cocktail.

Awe man that's just beautiful.
I love the way you make it sound so easy lol.
My empty cab is sitting in my garage waiting for a PC, IPAC, Arcade VGA card and monitor. It's going to take forever to get all that stuff on my budget. I WANNA PLAY NOW!!! he he.
Well done.

VERY NICE ! (as usual) :)

Howcome your projects get so cheap!
If it was here in Portugal, the final costs rounded about "$600" or even "$900"!
America rules in that way i can say so... ;D

Great Job!
That Vinyl looks great, may have to get some. :D
-
Are you using PacMAME with the Class of '81 ROM, or is this just regular MAME? What's the hardware setup like?
-
Oscar... can you just make a crappy cabinet just once... some rush/hack job so we can feel better about our projects?
How did you mount the PC powersupply to the bottom of the cabinet?

Thanks for comments!
The vinyl worked very well on this project, I'm glad I went that way. One of the concessions I had to make for this cab to be placed in the 2nd living room was that "it couldn't have any stickers or characters all over it" (as she put it...). :) So instead I used the black vinyl under the glass top instead of an underlay. It looks okay, I guess, but I would still have rather made a Ms.Pac/Galaga themed underlay. I'm patient, though, I know I can wear her down in time...
The write-up was a bit light in terms of the cabinet hardware/software config. Here's how I have it set up:
Hardware
AMD K6-2 500
192MB ram
ArcadeVGA
SB Pro (ISA) - still the best soundcard for MAME, especially in DOS!
Software
Win98SE - booting into DOS mode
Gamelauncher (rotated for vertical monitor)
DOS MAME .70
I used DOS because I don't have (or need) a keyboard/mouse on this cabinet. When I'm done playing, I just exit GL and shutdown the cabinet with the switch. I've heard speculation that recent builds of DOS MAME have included fixes for the auto-res, but whatever MAMEDEV did or included, it works great now! Every vertical game I've tried comes up perfect, no fiddling at all with the monitor or software resolution settings, and I get a perfectly filled screen every time. I don't have all that many games on this cabinet. My game list consists of the Pac's & Galaxian/Galaga ones, Mr Do & Mr Do's Castle, Donkey Kong, Time Pilot, 1942, and a other classic vertical games. I altered JoyMonkey's VMOVER batch file (http://mame.joymonkey.com) to copy over all the vertical games from my upright cabinet across my network into this cabinet, then I scanned through the remaining games and only kept those with two buttons or less. Thanks to JoyMonkey for the batch file, it worked great! I was skeptical on how well the 8-way games would play with the 4-way Ms.Pac/Galaga sticks, but so far they seem to be working fine. I can't hardly tell I'm using a 4-way stick with games like Time Pilot and Gaplus.
rampy - I covered the bottom of the power supply with this type of velcro tape. It's probably the most securely attached component in the cabinet! ;)

Nice work on the cabinet looks great. One question those little peices of wood holding the corners together
did the factory use brad nails to fasten them?

Beautiful job! Gives us all a goal to shoot for.

They appear to be just typical 18ga x 1" staples, like that used with a pneumatic stapler. They hold well, but the real strength comes from this goopy glue used on all the mating faces. Those blocks are likely just for lining up the sides and holding the cab together will the glue sets up.

"Hail to the King baby!" ;D
A prize to the one who finds out who said that in a game!!

Duke Nuke'm from Duke Nuke'm 3d.
I think they are coming out with another one soon. I loved Duke Nuke'm 3d!

they've been working on it forever "Duke Four-ever"
Oscar, awesome work. I've been trying to figure out where to get the reunion Glass overlay/underlay piece but it seems like it's an impossible piece to get. They apparently didn't give you that piece with yours.

You SHOULD be able to order the reunion cocktail glass/underlay from any arcade distributor. It is still a current game. So parts should still be available.
But judging from the poor quality artwork* on the reunion upright, I would just go with a repro Ms. Pac underlay, it will probably look better.
*Take a good look at the marquee on a reunion upright, they look like they were printed on a freaking inkjet or something.
-
No, there was absolutely no artwork from the cabinet. They had stripped it clean, removing everything right down to the leg levelers, hinges, etc...
I've emailed a couple places that sell the reunion cabinets online about getting the underlay, but they aren't very interested in helping. They want to sell cabinets, not parts. I'm sure if I'm persistent enough, I can find someone to sell me an underlay, tho.
I'm not sure how good a repro underlay would look since they are so different in size. The top on the reunion cocktail measures 37" x 27 1/4" with 3/4" radius corners, versus a Pac cocktail that is 32" x 22" with 2" radius corners.
-
Oh, I didn't realize that the reunion cocktail differed from the original Midway cocktail design.
Is the upright different that the originals? Well, the workmanship is much lower quality, but are the dimensions the same? They seem to be the same, but I have never seen a reunion upright closer than 50 feet to an original, so it is hard to tell.

He said GAME, not MOVIE! heh, Yeah, it was Duke Nukem 3D. Forgot when he says it. I think when he looked in a mirror.

there was an "army of darkness" game.
I'm sure it was said again in that one.

Heck, where's MY prize? There is an "Army Of Darkness" game, so I win too. Besides, I gave my answer first. ;D
-
Buzzzz! Sorry, the judges disagree. The correct anser was Duke Nuk'em 3D. Arm of darkness game? nevah heard of it! ;)
reminds me of Kramer being on Jeopardy and getting the final jeopardy question, "what do George Wallace, Roger Ebert, and Al Gore have in common?"
Kramers answer: "Who has never been in my kitchen"
At least I think that was a seinfeld episode.. :o

It was an episode of Cheers. Cliff finds that all the Jeopardy categories are things that he excels in knowledge in, such as "Bar Room Trivia" and something to do with the post office.

Oscar,
This inspired me to build a cocktail cab as my second project. Very nice job!
