I using a older version of mame.exe. How do I update it without losing all my settings exe? I'm guessing just copy and paste new exe files over old ones?
-
Yes you can do this (you don't even have to overwrite the old one, just give the new one a different name and run it from the same directory), but you have to be a little careful. Very old versions of MAME do not use the same format configuration files as new versions. In otherwords, if the versions are too far apart, you will lose your settings and whatnot. What versions are you using?
-
I'm using I think 127. I'm not home right now but I'm sure that's right. Just to test I copied all exe files and made a backup just incase it didn't work. then pasted new exe files and it worked but some games didn't work anymore so I put it back like it was.

Did you update the roms too? That could be why those games don't work (or the new MAME version has broken them for now).
-
How do you do that?
-
Download the new roms over your old ones and it will only update the ones that are either new or have changes.
-
Download new roms over old ones? Not sure what you mean.
-
Say you were to download a torrent of the latest roms, you would point it to the directory that contains your old roms and it would overwrite the ones that need overwritten (anything that has been updated, plus newly added games). That way, you don't have to redownload EVERYTHING (20GB just for the ROMs).

Ahh I smell what you're stepping in now. Just don't under stand how getting same rom will make it start working on newer mame exe. But I am new to this.
-
It won't be the same if it's been updated. (Also, like I said, some games stop working in newer versions)
-
Ahhh. So lets say I download newest roms. Then I copy to old folder then when it says "do you want to copy over old file" I put yes to all?
-
I have to go to Walmart....
I do have time to say this much: you're missing the point.

Do tell

I know what you mean now. I'm not sure what rom version I have so I downloaded the right rom set for the newsest mame version. That was info I needed THANKS
