Title: Vinyl Venders
Post by: TheQ on September 16, 2009, 07:55:15 pm
I'm looking for a place I can purchase some black vinyl for the sides and front of my cab.  I've been searching and found a few older threads but the information seems outdated.  Any suggestions?

Thanks

Me aswell!  :hissy:

I found this site http://as-essentials.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=107_112 (http://as-essentials.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=107_112) but i'm not so sure about how it would look! I have to have a look around locally for laminate, but because its Ireland I probably have very little chance.

Shortbus, if you are in Miami. Try Shell Lumber by US1 and 27 AVE. They have everything! On weekends, they even have free snowcone.  :lol

if you mean the sticky vinyl on a roll used for making signs with, then a sign shop, or better a vinyl supplier to the sign shops.

i have a little 13 inch wide vinyl graphics cutter, and i buy my vinyl from a vinyl supplier down the road from me (i live in nottingham, UK)

You can get upto 48 inch wide off the roll, price per meter depends on the quality, but the quality of sign vinyl is based on fade resistance and adhesive properties when on a vehicle out in the sun wind and rain, it's usualy rated in years, i.e. oracal 7 year vinyl should stay looking like new and stuck firmly for 7 years, cheapo chinese 1 year vinyl will look naff very quick, but will be pence per meter as opposed to pounds per meter.

There's also different thicknesses, thicker hides imperfections better, but thinner goes round contours better.

if you need less than 48 inches width, then ask if they have any noggins, that's the trade name for the off cut rolls (someone wants a roll 40 inches wide, they cut it and the 8 inch bit gets put on a shelf till someone like me comes along and buys it for peanuts because the pro shops dont want to use less than a full width roll on the machines, and pro machines range from 24 to 48 inches or larger))
you can sometimes get 3 or 4 meter full width roll ends cheap, most people buy 5 or 10 meters at a time, so when they get odd bits they go onto the noggin pile.

Definately hit up any local sign shop. They'll show you how to install it, and give your a vinyl squeegee to boot. Not to mention you might be suprised at the variety of materials available.

You can also try parts-express. They sell rolls of vinyl for speaker cabinets.

In the US, I found a dealer that sells the same vinyl that Happ sells, and cheaper...including shipping.  They're located in Cleveland, OH

http://www.veii.com/ (http://www.veii.com/)  1-800-321-2311

I was going to order some black pica viny...and quoted for $3.70 a foot. (40" or 48" wide)  After talking to the sales associate on the phone I was ready to buy....their vinyl ships in tubes and don't come folded like other vendoers.

I didn't order as I found a great looking NBA Hangtime cab to mame.  Granted, this was about 4-5 months ago, so don't shoot me if the prices increased.  :)

But...$3.70 is a lot better than $5.45/ft Happ is selling right now. (32% cheaper)

Hope this info helps!

theres guys selling vinyl thats folded when shipped?
That's nuts.

I'm telling you guys, any next day signs, or similar local sign shop will be happy to sell you raw sheet vinyl at a reasonable price. They'll likely cover it with application tape (easier to install) and throw in a squeegee to boot.

Not sure if you guys are familiar with Rich at thisoldgame.com but he sells vinyl at a decent price and is a good guy to work with. I bought his matte black vinyl a few weeks back and used it, it looks great.

On another note, Does anyone have pics of a cab (preferably MDF) covered in leather (pleather) black vinyl and finished with black t-molding?

Will this self adhesive vinyl stick to sanded plywood? Does the plywood need to be primed? Or will this stuff just stick to MDF?

Thanks for any help.

Vinyl will stick best to smooth non-porous surfaces. Glass, metal, slick plastics etc...
Raw wood (even if sanded) will not provide a very good bond. It should be primed AND painted (preferably with a gloss paint) to give better adhesion.

If you roll paint on, any texture within the paint may show through the vinyl

EDIT; Meant to say GLOSS paint (not glass paint). I suck at typing

Here's a UK one - I used their matt black vinyl: http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/vinyldepot-retail__W0QQ_armrsZ1 (http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/vinyldepot-retail__W0QQ_armrsZ1)

I gave MDF a rolled-on coat of primer, sanded, then applied. Came out fine: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=88316.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=88316.0)

Funny I was looking for some vinyl too when I came across this on ebay:

This seller also carries vinyl for CP and other sizes. I'll be ordering from him at the end of the week. Seller told me that all vinyl is shipped in tubes.

How thin is this stuff?  The Happ pica vinyl is really thin and it's something I would not use for the side of a cabinet but I have used it on a CP and it worked great.  I'd be afraid of bumps or any slight imperfection showing through if this is something similar.

I just got it from the seller this weekend and haven't had time to put it on yet. I see your concerns of it being too thin and I really haven't seen the vinyl from Happ. I'll take a picture when I get home.

It's actually my first time working with vinyl.

Okay it turns it this is really thin. I'm going to use it on the sides of my bartop so hopefully it won't look too bad. (will definitely make sure the sides are smooth)

In a way I'm glad it's not any thicker, you see I only have t-molding for 3/4 plywood so any thicker  would have been a problem.

If you can, carry the vinyl over the sides so its just short of your T Mold slot...will look better than trying to cut it around the edge without jaggies...that way you have some room for goof ups as well!

Great idea Epyx will do. Luckily for me the pieces i ordered were 2ft x 2ft and my bartop meausures 24x 23 1/2. Will be close but it should be okay.

Sorry I haven't posted pics of my bartop. I've been really busy. As a very happy father of twin boys (now 7 months) I barely have any free time.
