Title: *New* - New file management system for the site being constructed
Post by: saint on September 16, 2009, 11:45:58 am
Text in this post is now outdated. See this post (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=96339.msg1014898#msg1014898).

----------------------------------------------

I want to add/modify a section of the site. I want to put in a file management system that's friendly to use and not terribly difficult to manage. I want to be able to host files for users to download. I do not want it tied to the forum unless there's a compelling reason to do so (so that I don't have issues when the forum is upgraded). Something along the lines of:

http://localarcade.com/arcade_art/
(using this http://www.4homepages.de/4images/features.php#english)
download.cnet.com

and the like. I want anonymous downloads available, no un-authorized file uploading, etc.  In a nutshell, I want to be able to offer arcade related downloads to the community through a managed system that can't degenerate into a warez site.

Suggestions?

Probably going to go with this:
http://files.arcadecontrols.com/index.php

though I'm going to change the theme I expect.

This is going to be nice to have saint with all the great files that pass through the forums my only suggestion is make it easy to upload to so we can contribute are arcade art also have a few people to go though the files before they hit the download section that way you can prevent warez and duplicate files and in the process get the files sorted correctly. and saint this definitly a welcome addition to the site.

I've reloaded. Can you sign up for an account on the system again please? This time you should get notice that your account is active once I approve it.

OK - other than a bit of tweaking and modifying the theme to something more in tone with the other sites here, I think this is what I'm going to be going with. Comments/suggestions/feedback welcomed and desired!

Will you claim rights/ownership of files put on this system like Flickr and other sites do?

No. In fact suggestions on verbage to the contrary welcome. 99% of what I'll put up here comes from / belongs to someone else!

Something like:

Or something like that.

I have some 5 gigs of arcade manuals and such to upload by the way, this will be a work in progress for a while!

k Saint got the emails for activating my account  ;D and just out of curiosity what kind of file limitations are you looking at as some raster images can get to be monstrous in size?

Not really an issue I think. How big? Bear in mind though I don't want arcade artwork on the library and am not attempting to duplicate the arcade art library. This is for other stuff :)

Right now the size is set to 2 megs. I will up that. What's reasonable?

That is where it might be an issue.  Original content is one thing but published copyrighted works are another.

Hell, if we're going to do this, though, may as well do it.  Should we add a troubleshooting library to the wiki?  Let people put up a page for a given game and enter notes with problem/solution matchings?

I'd love to see someone tackle adding that to the wiki. There's a lot of great resources out there of course, so even if it ended up just being a good directory.

3.8 gigs of data uploaded to the file repository so far (but not yet categorized, so not yet visible)!

Well as for file size considering what you uploaded so far 2 megs is more the enough even sketchup plans are only a few hundred k the only concern you might have are pictures members take of their cabs some of those can be in the 3-4 meg range or higher depending on the camera.

I've set it to 10 megs, some of the manuals hit 8 megs.

There is some stuff on the Restoration page (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Restoration) -- repair logs and some game-specific resources, but I have barely had the time to even clean up the list as it is.

Saint, I think this is a great idea. I uploaded mrotate2.zip and it is showing up, but when I downloaded it (for test purposes), and tried to unzip it, winrar gives me an error.
I noticed others have downloaded it too, I was wondering if they are experiencing any problems? I downloaded it with firefox, havent tried IE yet.

Hm. Dunno. Let me check. Other zip files are working I know but I manually put those there.

Yep, confirmed - uploading a zip file seems to corrupt it. Will troubleshoot.

Not correct. The file uploaded fine, the zip file is fine. Downloading the zip file is corrupting it.

/me continues to dig into this.

Just a suggestion.

Is it feasible to subcategorize, sort or whatever alphabetically? In other words, I'm looking at a fat list of manuals spanning 20 some odd pages. But I know for sure the manual I'm interested in starts with an 'N'. So rather than jumping to the N's, one would have to guess which page the N's are one and click around until they home in on the N's.

In other words, some file listing sites have a collection of links that jump you to the first letter. Such as A-E, F-H, I-L, M-P, Q-U so on and so forth.

If the feature is there, I've missed it.

Not that I know of but I'll look. This software is still a bit primitive in some respects. You can search by the name though.
