Alright, here's what I worked on this evening. This is the first of three characters I'll be making from the hit series "The IT Crowd"
Moss
16" tall

Roy and Jen coming soon...
-
Bump. Added the coasters.
-
Very nice Ginsu. Esp like the Moss :)
I keep meaning to make some more bead things, it's just having the time. I do like working with them though, I find it quite therapeutic.
-
Thanks Franco.
I might get some pics up later of some of the other creations I've done, like Mega Man, Tanooki Suit Mario, Mushrooms, and a glow-in-the-dark Pacman ghost.
I'm also looking to make a 3D Weighted Companion Cube from Portal.

Do it!
-
I've seen some people make them, but only as a flat-sided cube. I'm going to attempt it with depth.
-
Here are a few other small ones I did this weekend

Where do you find the patterns for these, or are you making them?
-
With the game related ones, I download or rip the sprites and print them in a grid and use that as my guide. For the Kuroneku (Trigun cat) and The IT Crowd ones, I looked at a reference and drew them pixel by pixel, then printed them out. Sometimes instead of printing them, I just pull 'em up on my laptop.
-
Love The IT Crowd. Very nice likeness of Moss.

Thanks. I'd been playing a lot of old Lucasarts SCUMM games lately, rewatching The IT Crowd, and making stuff with the perler beads, so the Maniac Mansion-esque style caught my eye.
I've already had one member here offer to pay me to make him a set of IT Crowd characters.
-
Over at pixelgasm, member "kenobius" just posted this animation of how he makes his bead creations. Pretty cool.

Very cool :)
Thanks for the heads up to pixelgasm, I hadn't seen that site.
Lostmitten at Etsy has made some cool stuff. That's where I got the idea for my Mario Bros Wiimote tidy from. [This (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=35630&page=1)] is her store.
Couple of my favourite bits of hers:
SMB coin box:

Space Invaders notepad:

Mario Coasters:

Space Invaders and Tetris fridge magnets (needlepoint obv but you could do the same with beads):

digging up my old post from March 2009 on KLOV-
cool, I actually know of an incredible nifty free program for what your doing and might help you it's called "Artopik" I used it for making some perler bead coasters; You just need to download any sprite / bmp image and then "import" it into "artopik" and it will create where you need to make the colors. It's actually really for stitching patterns which is what your doing but fun for coasters.
I made a bunch more since then maybe i'll post a pic tomorrow. All of them are coasters for the bar. But seriously just google "artopik" its free and it rocks.
-
Nice coasters, Josh. I use an online program called PerlerPal (http://www.edsalisbury.net/projects/perlerpal/). Works great.
-
Awesome Ginsu! Moss rocks...nuff said :)
-
Thanks...and he's fully seated. ;)
-
Just made Jen from The IT Crowd. Sorry for the blurry pic. I need to order more beads and I'll be able to make Roy.
-
where do you get the beads from? I wanna try this!
-
The brand in the US is Perler, and the UK has Hama.
Walmart and Hobby Lobby carry them in mixed buckets, or you can order individual colors (and you'll need pegboards) from http://www.koolstuff4kids.com/perlerbeads.html (http://www.koolstuff4kids.com/perlerbeads.html)
-
Made some fridge magnets and sent them as a bonus item to newkillergenius. Check 'em out on his black fridge!
-
Oh cool.... I have a black fridge... added to list of projects I need to get done, lol.
-
Ok, i've seen you guys doing these things but how to they stick together? Do you bake em or something?
-
Iron and parchment paper
-
Love the centipede ones :)
You have given me the idea to do some spacies ones for our fridge. It dark grey rather than black but it should still look nice I think.
I have found a bag of 1000 white, I think we will need some more but we should be able to make a start tonight :)
Oh yeah, for anyone in the UK, http://www.beadmerrily.co.uk/ (http://www.beadmerrily.co.uk/) is where I get mine from.
-
that centipede perler makes me want to keep my centipede cabinet and start that project hehe.. oh sorry i'm a few months late.. more coasters...
-
not sure what character this is.. but it's a little larger and can support a bottle. (http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/2404/1000034.jpg)
-
Nice coasters, mate.
-
Very nice mrclean 8)
We were going to do some spacies for the fridge last night but I only wanted to do them in white so they would stand out against the fridge but some parts of the spacies are not connected with the rest of the body and so wouldn't have melted together properly.
So we decided to do some quick and easy coasters instead:
I know some of you guys like the melted side up but I much prefer the non melted side.
We are thinking about doing an image from a spacies screen grab, something like this:
The spacies resolution and therefor pixel count is 224x260 which means we will need 58240 beads :dizzy: I am going to ask her today to see if she is up for it.
Each bead is about 5mm in diameter so this would give us a image size of 1.12m x 1.3m which I think would look pretty nice once framed and in the game room :)
-
Nice work Ginsu! Love the Mario stuff! :applaud:
Man, I need to build me some coasters. Those look pretty badass!
-
I know some of you guys like the melted side up but I much prefer the non melted side.
They stay together better and don't tend to warp as easily if you do both sides.

Subtract the black. Just mount it on foam core.
-
Yeah I agree they will stay together better but I haven't had any problems with mine coming apart or from warping.
I was speaking to the GF earlier and I think we are going to leave the black out and mount them on a 1.2m x 1.4m piece of glossy black acrylic. That brings it down to about 4000 beads (~£6 + £14 acrylic) rather than £80 for 58000 beads and should take a whole lot less time too! :)
-

Well, if you flat iron one side and just melt the hell out of them, they'll stay fine. I tend to lightly melt both sides, with the most melting happening on the back.
-
Ginsu...that is awesome...Ive seriously been thinking of doing some for some quick wall art...Now I know where to start....
-
It's a lot of fun and the level of difficulty depends on what you want to do. Last night I was bored, so I made a Pac-man while I watched TV. It was the easiest sprite I'd ever done, but I wanted one to go with my ghost. However, there are people who do some INSANE work. For me, the IT Crowd characters have been my biggest project so far. Here's an example of what the pros can do, though:

I am genuinely interested in doing some of this stuff, do you have a repository you use to get sprites from? I would start very genero..then work myself up to like megaman, sonic, ryu, crap like that.
I think it would be cool to do some of the mario ones and decorate a kids room with them.
-
Very cool!! :applaud:
-
You've inspired me.

Very nice Malenko, addictive isn't it :)
While it's not bead work I thought you might like to see this draught exluder my GF made the other day. I printed some templates out for her and she did the rest.

Awesomes!
We need a star for our tree. Its too late now but I'm definitely making a Mario star for next year :)

I wasn't going to bother this year as I didn't think I had enough beads and it would be too late to order some but I found some I had forgotten about ;D

I'll mount it to some yellow acrylic when I buy some next and add a strap for cable ties on the back but it will do just perching on a branch for this year.
Thanks for posting the picture of your Malenko, I used it to make mine
-
looks great franco! I was gonna do the same thing, now I know it works

Well, I finally got around to finishing my IT Crowd perler creations. Here's Roy:

I was gonna start a new post on this, but I dug up this old one, hope no one minds me doing this.
I have been meaning to make some pixel art / bead sprites for a while now, and after some research, bought some peg boards and some perler beads.
here is my first creation, from Bubble Bobble
(http://i.imgur.com/PNRye.jpg)
someone posted this link a while back
the url has changed and seems to be a very awesome little tool
http://mypixelpal.com/ (http://mypixelpal.com/)
Next up is Tiki from 'The New Zealand Story' (Taito, 1988)
and Marco from Metal Slug
-
Nice work.
I haven't taken any pics lately, but we have several new ones, including Bub & Bob, Kirby, and more, up on our walls.
Marco is definitely one I've been planning on, but I need to make sure I have the right colors first.
-
Thanks, I spent more time sorting the colors (tedious) than making it :-\.
You're absolutely right about the colors, at my local Michaels store, there are a bunch of different colors that come in certain containers/boxes that are not standard in the 11k, 22k jars.

Good stuff man, the Kirby and pac-man cherry are my faves!
also the Knight from Ghost n Goblins/Ghouls n Ghosts is awesome aswell!

Arthur was definitely the hardest, just because of all the colors.
