It was on Commodore 64. The graphics had a side-view. You controlled a guy who would explore a space ship of some sort, and every now and then you'd suddenly be chased by an "alien" with really frantic music. You'd have to run like crazy to escape it. It really got the adrenaline going when the alien appeared.

Hmm my favourite computer of all time I should know this... Are you sure its a spaceship? Any more details?

Dan Dare III - The Escape
I'd forgotten all about the Dan Dare games, haven't played those for 15 years or more....will have to fire these up my my C64!
-
LOL...just saw the links now...I think the incorrect one was cached...ill fix those.
Ya Epyx was obviously one of my favourites. I loved the "Games" series, Apshai etc.
Lots of other great dev/publishing houses though:
EA (back when gameplay was important!) M.U.L.E, Archon, Bard's Tale
Origin Systems

It's not Dan Dare. The game was not a platformer. (Speaking of Dan Dare game, why is there a vibrator shooting at his head on the cover art? http://www.dan-dare.net/Dan%20C64/Dan-Dare-Commodore-64.htm )
The game graphics were more like long side-view corridors. It seemed very "Aliens" inspired. I used to think it was called "Stellar 7" until I looked it up and remember that Stellar 7 is a 3D tank game I used to love.
So the title might sound similar to that. With a number in it. Also, I think the game might have been from europe and never released in North America.

Hmm there were two variations of Aliens...the NA/Euro versions. I always preferred the NA one with the ship landing sequence...could it be the Euro one you are thinking of?
-
Are you sure it's C64? Sounds somewhat familiar to something out of Sierra's Space Quest series (2 or 3?!?).
-
Yup, definitely C64, as that's all I had up until around 1992. Played with a joystick, not a mouse.
I looked through some game lists and the name "Stalag 23" stood out. But couldn't find screen shots for that game.
-
Hmm probably not RayB as that was a text only game ;)

One of my favorite games. The atmosphere (atmosfear?) was unbelievable and the music very alien-y. Glad I could be of service.
