Title: What games use 8-buttons? Do I need 8 per player?
Post by: sofakng on July 14, 2003, 12:16:06 am
Still doing research for my cabinet...

How many buttons do I need per player?

My two MAIN games are Marvel vs Capcom and Metal Slug.

Marvel vs Capcom uses 6 buttons.
Metal Slug uses 3 (but other Neo Geo games use 4).

So, should I have 7 buttons per player?  3 on a top row, and 4 on the bottom row (to support Neo Geo style).

Do any games use 8 buttons per player?

Hardly anything uses that many buttons.

7 buttons should suffice, unless you plan numerous consoles (newer ones)! Good luck.

Yeah remember if your doing 7 buttons, make the 7th (the extra neo geo one) a duplicate of say one of the top row buttons ie

 123
 456
3

This way it actually only uses 6 inputs.

I use all 8, but only 7 to play.  the P1 S8 is a dedicated Pause button and P2 S8 is my middle button in a 3 button layout for my mouse (missile commnad layout).

My buttons are laid out as such:

 123  (All Blue)
7456  (Neo Geo Colors)

You can use a Controller.ini file to make the Neo Geo buttons take over when playing NG games.  then it will look like this

 XXX  (not used durning play)
1234 (In order of neo geo colors too!)

You have to use the switch -crtl when using it, but i haven't figured out how you would do this from a FE, say MameWah.  Does anyone know this one?

If you ever decide to use a PSX emulator with your cab you will want 8 buttons.

What is the quality of Playstation emulation now anyway?

i think 8 buttons is cluttered. im sticking with 6, and if i wanna play newer [console] stuff, i'll buy a usb adapter and use the actual pad.

I haven't done it in awhile, but when I tried it around a year or two ago, it seemed pretty much perfect.  I would assume it's pretty much perfect now.

Yeah I doubt Ill do Playstation emu in my cab, I don't see the point really when I could use my actual PSX in the cab, plus you could wire a 7th/8th button up to somewhere else (ie a coin button) for the L2 / R2 buttons as they are not used much.

I just downloaded epsxe the other night to try it out. It works pretty darn well - even with newer games.
