I want to have the ability to basically "switch" between the regular arcade control panel, and two xbox 360 wired controllers underneath for different consoles (n64, Ps). What type of setup would I need for something like this?
If I understand correctly, in basic terms for the arcade part ill need an IPAC + the arcade joysticks and buttons. What else or different do I need to add the controllers? Thanks so much

to add the controllers, all you would really need are open USB ports. i had my 2 player cab set up like that for a while. not so much for playing other emulators, but i set it up so i could use the xbox gamepads for players 3 and 4 for a few good games of TMNT. are you planning on leaving them connected all the time? if not, you would have to make sure you plug them back into the same USB ports, and in the proper order to make sure they work as you want them to all the time.

I would definitely have them connected all the time. How will the emulators know that Im switching from the arcade controls back to the xbox controllers? Or will I have to manually go into the system and change it every time?

you could just set the buttons in mame for both at the same time.. then you dont have to worry about it.
when you go to set a button in mame.. enter one button.. then wait.. then without moving to a different input hit enter again and it'll wait for another button press..
if done correctly it will say for example: player 1 button 1 = ctrl OR joy 1 button 1
i would'nt worry about keeping them connected all the time the pads are on a cord if you end up with the wrong pad just exchanged them with who ever else playing.

You should also consider the wireless adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2
This allows the xbox360 controllers to connect wirelessly to windows. There you dont need ugly wires going into the cab.
There is an issue on mine where it is impossible to turn on the wireless controllers without pulling the batteries. There might be a fix fir that but I haven't looked.

are you plannign on using the gamepads for mame also, or just other emulators?

More than likely just other emulators. I think 6 and a joystick is good for the mameing ill be doing, but I guess it would be nice... just in case
