Title: Trimming t-molding

I'm building a bartop out of 1/2" mdo.  I have enough 3/4" t-molding to cover it and I'm trying to avoid spending any money at the moment.  I cut a slot in a scrap piece of 1/2" and tried to shave down the t-molding to 1/2" with a utility knife.  It turned out okay but not great.  Any tips or tools I could use to get better results?
