I'm curious. . need to start shopping for one of these to stick in front of my Defender.

I use one of these from Target. They are adjustable, fairly comfortable, avalable in several colors and look kind of 80's retro.

i picked up some swivel stools at a pawn shop for $25/pair that work pretty well.
the seat is 30", which is a great height for my main mame cabinet . the control panel is around 40" high at the joystick. and while it isn't functional yet, they feel like they will be fine also for use with my donkey kong cabinet, which has a panel height of around 36" at the joystick.
they are metal framed stools, but they were missing the rubber end caps on the backs, so i filled those holes with some extra pushbuttons i had lying around..:)

I don't use a stool......if you're sitting down then how are you going to knee your machine in the guts when it beats you??

29" barstools one for each cab. WIth padding they are about 30"...work great :)

Maybe someone should come up with a "conversion standard" table for this sort of thing, ala:
CP is @ 40 inches to stool should be at 30 inches for an upright.
CP height (upright)
--|---|-----|----|----|
| 30 35 40 45
v --|---|-----|----|-----|
*
Tall 15 20 25 30
Medium 20 25 30 35
Short 25 30 35 40
* means your upper body height (spine length), and gives "fake" values for how high your stool should be. Medium would be the "My spine is normal, and my CP is at 40 inched and my stool is at 30 inches".
This is an example of what I would like to see, esp if it can be done empirically.
Short would mean you are small in stature (spine length short).

i dont always use a stool..i usually just stand. however if you have small children, a stool is required. my 2 year old wants to play all the time, i can put him on a stool and he is at just the right height. then i sit on the other one while he is screwing around playing.

Are those pretty sturdy? I'm a heavy b**ch! :) Going to stop by the local Target today to see if they have them.

This is the bar stool I got. Its from Ikea...was cheap and can hold my buddy who weighs over 300lbs...

I got blue cushions from Linens and things before they went under here in Canada.

i like this question cause i havent found a good stool yet.
any of the expensive cushioned ones i get fall apart in a year or so.
the only good stool ive found are the cheap solid oak ones but they hurt your butt after a good game or two or 3.
my stool is 29 inches tall.

i had to play with them a little to get the pushbuttons to go in the whole way.. i had to remove two of the screws that attach that top bar, and i had to wrap the threads of the buttons a few times with electrical tape to get a nice tight fit. i dont think i will ever use those pushbuttons, because they were a little beat up. i pulled them out of an old cabinet...i like to use nice shiny new ones. i may end up cutting the switch holders off of the bottom to make them fit in there a little better. i'm just not sure about the colors..i may just end up getting a few new yellow and blue ones so they would match the theme of my cabinet.
either way, i get alot of comments on them when people come over....everyone loves the buttons in the end..it just adds that extra touch.

You can try out the HAPP arcade stools:

I remember these stools from my local arcade so they were one of the first items on the list when I planned my cab. The cushion isn't the best for very long periods of play, but they are still really comfortable. They also have a version with a back rest if you prefer.
-
I have 4 of those exact stools - 3 I bought locally off of CL and the 4th from someone my wife knows. They are awesome, and arcade authentic too.
-
I use the 29" version of the Ikea Barstool (with back). They are very sturdy when assembled and I've never had a problem with them. I have two and they are stackable! :-)
A buddy of mine has both the 25" and 29" versions in his arcade room. You can't go wrong at only $14.99. They are very comfortable to play in, especially with the rubberized footrest.

I've attached a pic of my arcade with the stools below for reference.
