Title: Dropped TV... salvageable?
Post by: frustrated_gamer on August 25, 2009, 02:23:29 am
:'(OK, so my home made MAME cabinet is ready for it's final coat of paint, my first project(of any wood working sort at that) and I'm pretty excited that soon I will be able to play my machine.  I came home from work today to find that my TV, the one that the cabinet dimensions are designed for which has resided on my couch in my "locked" office, has found it's way, upside down on the floor... bottom line, it FELL! :badmood:  Wife and kids swear that they didn't do it.

Anyways, now I have that cool rainbow border around two corners of my TV/monitor and I've already tried the "magnet on the drill" trick, nothing.  Are there any tips or suggestions before I scrap the TV and use my cab as a garage conversation piece about the "arcade that never was"? :timebomb:

Please help, I know you guys have been here and I can't think straight after the thoughts of this project being a waste!

What size television were you using?  Television sizes don't vary too much, so you will be able to replace it.  Post the make and model of the TV and we might even be able to help you find one identical to it.

If all else fails you can decase a tv and add brackets to your cabinet.  No matter what size the television you were going to put in there was, a decased TV with the same tube size should be small enough to fit.

Many thanks grantspain and Jack Burton for your lightning fast responses.  You kept me from stressing over how I'd fix the damn thing and concentrate on how I'm going to afford a new one!

It was a 27" TV, the dimension I'm worried about with a replacement is the 25" width of the TV.  This TV had a very slim case on the sides, allowing it to fit nicely, with the case, into a 27" opening with some room on the sides for "nailing strips"(3/4" width) on each side.  The cabinet itself is 27" wide(inside dimension).  The TV is a GE 27GE620.  I wouldn't mind using a different TV, I've found others on-line in the area, but they don't seem to match this 25" width restriction I've set for myself(well, it's kind of required if I want to put this beast anywhere other than my garage).

I could use help identifying which Brand/Model TV's remember their last state when power is removed, because I was going to have to use a TV remote to power on/off the one that is now trash.  Or even better, which ones power on immediately to the "input" channel, instead of channel "00" or "02", which are useless to me.

By the way, I'm in Southern California, if anyone has one of these babies just lying around for me.

Thanks again!

Fascinating.  If I were to go for the absolute limit of OEM restoration I would consider using their services.  There is a noticeable difference between modern arcade monitors and ones made 20+ years ago.

f_g: if you set it with the tube side facing out, I can bet the weight on that end (where the majority of it is) easily overcame the resistance of the couch cushioning and - oopsy-daisy!

But, yeah, it should be easier and cheaper than ever to replace.
