Title: I just did a OHHH CRAP! I hit a F150 with my wifes car
Post by: daywane on August 24, 2009, 06:57:59 pm
It could have been real bad! 100% my fault!  :-[

I was on a side road turning left. I just plain did not see this truck. A small car pulled up on to my right side.... blocking my view.I thought the road was clear. I pulled out into the main road and got caught up real fast in a @#$% spot. I almost hit a car that was turning left onto the side road...
I hit the breaks and waved oops sorry to the guy turning left.

He shot buy me and then I see a F150 about to hit me in the drivers door at 55 miles per hr. I let out a OH SUGER and then he hit a hard left and almost missed me.
his back end swerved and hit my pasanger front. I got his pasanger door all the way down to the tail gate.

even busted his back pasanger tire.

He had to be towed. My car is now UGLY. both air bags went off. (Man That Stinks) shredded my dash and steering wheel.  took off my bumper and grill
pasanger fender is buckled, all pasanger light are gone. Pasanger door will not open. (fender is in the way.)

I am fine. The other guy is fine. I fell like crap for pulling a 100% my fault OHHH CRAP.

Police were cool.... every thing went down just fine. I just can not believe I pull a stupid OH Crap!

You must be glad it is just your wifes car and not your own.  I concur that any accident you walk away from is very fortunate.  Unfortunately you will get grief until it gets fixed and then some after....

Hows the F150?  Totalled?

I do not thing so.. new pasanger door. new back fender and new back tire he should be fine. his air bags did not go off. seems strange .... he was towed off.  I drove home ... I am considered total wreck. Car drives great but totaled because air bags?

I'm glad you and the oher guy wasnt hurt! Could've been different and makes you re-think the whole driving process (yes, its a process).

I'm guessing the F-150 had to be towed because the tire was blown and possible back axel damage. I'd have mine towed also, just to be sure. Your air bag deployed because you hit him in the side of the truck with your front end. Be glad they deployed! His didnt deploy because he doesnt have side impact airbags.

Is your car totalled because of the airbag deployment? Depends on what state you live in. Most states wont let a car with a deployed airbag be re-registered, but most of the cars in West Virginia and Alabama are piece-meal cars anyway (<--small joke)!

Now lets hope your deductable is low and you can have yours paid off or if it already paid off, get KBB value prior to crash.

This is only a minor inconvience for you and your family. It would be a major inconvience if you had been killed. Your wife will rationally think about how it could have been if you ate the steering wheel vs the air bag deployment.

I hope your in a 'NO FAULT' state and you dont have to go to court. Because by your admission on here, some private eye will find your admission and use it against you.

I wish the best for you, get a hot shower and a hot pad for sleep tonite! Your gonna feel sore in the morning!

On a similar note, I got rear-ended on the way to work this morning.  Luckily it wasn't bad and the only damage is some scratched paint on my bumper, so I told her not to worry about it.  No point in having my insurance go up over something so minor.

Can they really ding your insurance where you live for getting rear ended?  Everywhere I have lived that's a 100% no fault and you can't get an increase on those.

MA has a tendency to label anything not obvious with a "50% fault" or "no fault".  That way nobody can be blamed and thus both parties can get an increase.   ::)

Nah, your rates won't increase if you didn't cause it.  But insurance companies love for you to believe that.

Well regardless it's minor enough that I didn't think it was worth the trouble.

Yeah, if you don't have a solid witness, the police come to take a statement so that the insurance companies have reliable reports to go with.

We just need to send in some crappy mobile-phone or trow-away-camera pics with the forms. In the end the insurance companies decide who is fault. Rule of thumb is that the one in the back is wrong.

Isn't it that 150's are meant to be wrecked? They are old century's transport vehicles, not compatible with the Copenhagen treaty Obama is going to sign.

I don't think this is true.  Your insurance company may not raise your rates, but it complicates getting new insurance.  When I moved to Florida I had to get new insurance cos my insurance provider didn't operate here.  State Farm considered me uninsurable because I had three accidents, one which was no-fault (but paid for by my insurance company), and two that were 100% the other driver's fault and my insurance company didn't pay a cent.  The no fault claim (a semi's tire burst and a huge chunk of it slammed into the front of my car, destroying the bumper) cost the insurance company less than $1000.

After more than 10 years of driving this was the extent of my accident record and State Farm considered me uninsurable.  When I asked how they could possibly count accidents against me that were 100% the other driver's fault the person on the phone said that's just the way it works.

What part of uninsurable do you not understand?  Of course I hung up and called another insurance company.   :laugh2:

FL has really stupid insurance rules because of all the times they have had to rebuild the areas that shouldn't have houses on them.  It only takes a few $3mill houses getting wiped out every 5th year to change the profit equations.

DISCLAIMER: YMMV, check with your insurance company for details on your own policy and/or coverages.

Generally speaking, there is a threshold limit on accidents in each state.  If there is an at-fault accident, and the total damage is over that limit (not per car, but per accident) then typically the at-fault person's insurance goes up.  You'll need to see if there is any sort of accident forgiveness program in your state.  Usually, you need to have a clean driving record for about 5-7 years since the last at-fault.  The time period could be either for the household or per driver.  If there is going to be an increase, it will happen at the next renewal of the insurance after the date of the accident and will last for 3 years.

Daywane:
Since your vehicle is now considered a salvage vehicle, you can now remove any comprehensive and collision coverages.  Your insurance company has given you the value of the car.  If you do decide to keep comp and coll on the vehicle, you will still have to pay the full premium while only getting any payout/repairs based on a salvage value.  Personally, I would keep the comp to take care of glass/Mother Nature/animal damage.  Depending on the age of the vehicle, it might not make a big difference between a large deductible and a small one.

pinballjim:
If you live in FL, you already know several companies are moving out of FL or limiting their business for homeowner policies.  Some insurers will insure the house, but exclude windstorm damage.  The DOI (Dept of Ins) doesn't want companies to charge what is right in order to keep insurance rates down and to keep voters happy.  Citizens (state run insurance comp) is insuring about half the state last I remember, and they're supposed to be the insurer of last resort.  If a big hurricane runs through FL, the state is going to be on the hook.  Most homeowner policies specifically exclude flood (covered by a government policy, FEMA, I think) and earthquake (which can be "bought back" in most states).  A lot of policies may have a seperate deductible for windstorm.
