Title: control panel size
Post by: speedklz on August 19, 2009, 05:37:32 pm
I have a CP that is 12 tall by 24 wide is there going to be enough room for say 2 players with 6 buttons each and a track ball

Download Google Sketchup (it's free) and play with the dimensions.  Also you could use some scrap wood to make a mock up.  Or better yet get a large piece of cardboard cut with your dimensions to give you an idea.

Good luck!

Here's my thread where I'm working on a similar problem:

This has been addressed fairly recently so be sure to do a quick search for more answers.  I think the consensus was yes, but be a little smart with the spacing.  My panel is 25" wide with the same setup (two players, 6-buttons, 3 inch trackball.   I made sure my joystick plates were vertical, I stuck my buttons as close to the plate as possible and I even let a button bezel overlap the trackball plate (you don't see the plate if you recess it).

But YMMV - Sketch it up and play around.

Here's my attempt on squeezing in 2 joys, a trackball and a spinner, haven't had much time lately to continue on my project as i wished, (4 kids, working overtime blah blah blah). The overlay is 26.66 inch wide thou.

Imo 24-26" is fine as long as the P1/P2 control are as far to the left and right on the CP as they can be...ie even without a trackball in the middle space them apart.
