The second time on girders, you know how some people wait for the barrel and jump it, or wait until it almost hits them in the back and then jump and you get 100 points for proximity?
Well, what about the first blue barrel? I doubt it's original, but I don't recall seeing anyone doing it or talking about it, and so I tried it. It's not easy, actually. There's a special timing required, where you go behind the oil furnace, and right when the barrel hits the girder just above you, you run and jump, and clear it!
It has to be right, cos obviously due to how the game handles collision detection in that part of the screen, you don't even have to touch the barrel to die.
Try it out.

I will try it out - anything to improve my pathetic score!

If you watch videos/MAME INPs of some of the higher scoring players, they wait for the blue barrel to drop, jump next to it, then jump ahead of the spawned fireball to get several hundred points while they wait for barrels to get near the bottom. Most of them use the bottom hammer to point press too.

This is what I do. Learned it from Scott Kessler.

I'm not sure I understand that one, and will have to look for it.

Ohhh. You mean, both jump points' are awarded by proximity. Yeah, hadn't thought of that. Actually, I can't see the time it takes for that to really increase score. At best, it might match what you'd lose on the timer?

Okay, I tried this. I couldn't get the barrel jump, but got the fireball one.

Kong releases <timer/100>+1 barrels, so there's 51 barrels total on level 1 (timer starts at 5000). Any extra points you can get on top of jumping over every barrel adds up. If you can get the barrels doubled up and jump them (for 300 or 500), and run down the ladder and jump them again, yuo can really gain some ground. You can also jump the ahead of fireball at the bottom (already mentioned), but if you can time it to get a barrel in that jump, that'll give you 300. That's how the guys get so much extra points. The MAME record right now is 12,800! (I sometimes don't even have that at the end of the rivet level ;D )

I've gotten 800 from jumping three barrels, or from being in a really odd and tight spot where I jumped a couple, and had my back to a ladder and barrel came down it at the same time, or was moving and just missed getting bonked by it coming down.
I've nowhere near the level of interest that I'd explore all this kind of point-press, though.

Wow, and here I thought I was doing pretty well getting 9500 sometimes.
Oh well...

FYI: You actually only got 500, even though it says 800...a known DK bug ;)

I remember reading Hodges article on that...or maybe it was something over at Jeff's rom hack. Either way, I don't remember. I know I get 800 from hitting an oil barrel with a hammer when it says 800.
-
Yeah, it's just the jumping that has the bug, not the hammer smashes. Crazy Kong also has a similar bug when jumping over 3+, although instead of showing 800, it just shows garbage.

I've never really liked CK....but I may give it a run.
