Title: Rowe R-90 optical switch adjustment?
Post by: Grickle on August 14, 2009, 07:57:30 pm
I have a Rowe Ami R-90 jukebox that about one of every five times will pick the wrong record from the magazine. Sometimes it will pick it from the wrong spot and then put it back in that spot. Other times it will pick it from the wrong spot and then put it back in the spot it was supposed to pull it from. It seems like once it picks the wrong record, it will be a number off for awhile, then it will eventually go back to being right (after the magazine circles around?) The troubleshooting guide states the first thing I should do is adjust the optical switch. It is also giving error code 30.  Can anyone explain how to adjust the optical switch? Or do you have any other advice for this problem? I have ordered the manual and am waiting for it to arive.
Thanks David

Optical switch adjustments are detailed in the manual. Error 30 is "Index error" which means the optical switch is out of adjustment or is having trouble reading the slots of the magazine gear. This could be due to the optical switch optics being dirty or the gear itself is very dirty.

Hi David,

Ken is correct in your manual you will see a section to adjust the opto switch mechanical and also a section to adjust trimmers on the Mechanism Control Unit.
The electronic adjustm, ents should only be done after you have adjusted the mechanical adjustments.
Note if your Mechanism Control Unit is the older type then no trimmers are on the board.

Remove the opto switch and clean it and the gear that the opto fits over.

Thanks guys. It sounds like everthing should just be adjustments which is good, I was worried about working with the boards and the electrical, which I'm not so good at.

Hey I got it. The problem was actually the motor for the magazine was lose. It was actually dumb luck that a screw came out and made it really lose while I was adjusting the optical eye, otherwise I might not have noticed it.

Hi David,

Glad to hear that you have sorted out your problem.

The screws that hold the motor plate should have shakeproof or spring washers on them to stop this happening. I have seen in the past that the theaded holes can get stripped and have to be tapped at a larger size.
