I know you can hack a DS, PSP, etc, but I though this was an interesting piece of equipment...

Not sure if it's been seen here already, but it caught my eye...a bit expensive for my taste though.

its a newer version of a machine thats been round for years and i think i'm right in saying the controls are piss poor, older versions had far superior controls, google openpandora, that'll probably interest you too, its a similar but allegedly much better device, but its not out yet and people have been waiting a while for it, i want one.

Anybody notice the hammer music on DK was slow, and the Asteriods sounds were lower in pitch? Also, multi-control games would blow, cos of them being concentrated in the right pad.

ya those have been around a while, dont have one my self but from what i understand dont expect to play anything heavy with it..
i guess .37b15 is a popular version to run on it.
pretty neat though.

I don't like the idea of dual D-pads for general game play, but it would be ideal for Robotron, Smash TV, Karate Champ, Crazy Climber, and any other arcade game that used dual joysticks.
I wish someone would emulate Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out on the Nintendo DS and have it use both screens. I'd actually buy a DS for that.

I have one and it's great. here are some videos of it running various emulators. The videos are a few years old and the software has gotten better than what you see here. the gp2x is hard to beat for drag game onto SD card and play.

I've done a lot of research into this as portable emulation has always been something I've had, since my N-Gage way back in 2004. The Wiz is old news now and although ok for your 16-bit gaming, anything more and it will struggle, until someone manages to optimise new emulators for it's dedicated graphics core instead of porting over the '4all' range of emulators.
The pandora is another great piece of kit supposedly capable of (good) PSX emulation and all your PC frills, but it's still stuck in development hell. After much research, I opted for a PSP, which emulates all your 16-bit and less perfectly, GBA, N64 still being worked on, plus it directly plays PS1 isos using a quick file utility. Plus you get proper controls (unlike those horrible Wiz ones), a big screen, TV-Out on some and it will even run a decent build of MAME well, albeit without sound if you want good speed. The other great part about the PSP is the expandable memory up to 32Gb, so no need to have to leave stuff off and swap the content all the time.
Trust me, right now a PSP is the best option.

that's definitely right. the gp2x/wiz starts choking beyond 16bit stuff. the one thing w/ the psp that may turn off some users is updating the firmware. it's relatively straightforward these days and is still a cat and mouse game w/ sony.
BTW, off topic, do all folks in the UK refer to tech stuff as "kit"? I thought it was mostly a Scottish thing. I give my colleagues grief about this all the time.

The only way in this world for me to want to buy anything hardware related for classic systems is if its something that lets you play your collection on the original hardware.
theirs a big world of difference between an emulator and playing something, anything you want on the original console.
