Title: My Cab Project
Post by: Avinitlarge on August 14, 2009, 03:17:42 pm
Ive waited 8 years to do this but finally Ive started. Last Sunday I built the computer from a load of spare bits I had in the loft.

The Computer
Emachines Case
MSI KM4M-l Motherboard
Athlon 2600XP 2.06Ghz
250GB Maxtor Hard drive
Windows XP SP3
2Gb PC3200 RAM
AVGA graphics card

The Cab
Videomaster
WG K7000 with 21" replacement CRT
MEI ME115TS coin validator

I bought the cab from Ebay today. Ive not collected it yet, I am hoping to collect it in the next couple of days. I belive it is a Sega System 16 and is running Shinobi

i think its a jamma.

how much did you pay for it in the end,i saw this but,i just think cosmeticaly its a bit of a mess.the bidding was something like £10 or thereabouts.

i am picking up a jamma cab tomorrow,i will post pics of it when i got it.

i think them cabs have the pull out tray cp.means the control panel slides out.

why mame it when you can just sort the controls for 2 players and fit a multigame jamma board if it is jamma.i mean you could even have mame in there as well, you just need a jpac to attach a pc to the jamma system.

Thats a nice shape cab but the red and black suck --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- IMOHO. A quick makeover and that'll look really good. I would say go bright yellow, but if i had my way all MAME cabs would be yellow  ;)

What are your plans for the CP? what games do you plan on playing with it?

I won it for £57.99. Ive got to travel about 50 miles for it. It does look like it requires some attention but I thought it was pretty cheap compared to 3 I looked at the other day. The place I went to wanted £200 for the biggest piece of crap I have ever seen.

i like the red and black...especially the bezel.  i like bright yellow cabinets too though..i'm strongly considering redoing my cabinet yellow with blue molding, or blue with yellow molding.

if you look in that pic you posted, see the insides? where all the wires are, thats an alternating power supply if i aint mistaken for a jamma set up.

yours should be similar.

I collected it yesterday. The cabinet needs a little attention. The fault it had was simple to repair, Every pin on the line output transformer was dry. I fitted the AVGA card, Connected it all up and it works spot on. Just need to give it sound and a controller interface. It is a jamma cabinet with a Sega system 16 board and adaptor.

you cant go wrong for £58.

it would cost you more than that for the monitor,it will be mounted so that you can turn it vertical without messing, you got the power adaptor the isolated powrer supply for the monitor, jamma looms so you got a good bargain.

so what kind of work do you intend to carry out on the cab?

pics before hand perhaps so we can see the progress?

Ive started the body work. It needed some attention to the cabinet, A few chips and a broken corner. Ive repaired it with P38 car body filler. Ive stated to rub it down, Once it has been rubbed down, It is going to be painted. Ive put the game board on ebay as I have no use for it. When I stripped it, I found about a tenners worth of 20p's.

Nah, Im Rewiring it, Fitting a computer that is already done and fitting I-PAC. Im still keeping the coin mech though, A money box with a bit of fun attached.

I use my Fruit Machine as a money box, Problem is, When I win any money I spend it. Not a very good money box after all, Still fun though

Ive decided to replace the tube, 22 years of playing Shinobi has taken its toll. The blue is flairing but the tube is scared to hell. Ive gotten hold of a tube but its a 21", Mine is a 19". Ive wired the scan coils and tube base from the chassis to the replacement tube, It all works fine with a cracking picture. Ive now got to alter the metal frame to get it all to bolt together.

The tube is fitted now. I bought a new piece of 18mm plywood to mount the tube and chassis. I had to use the original tube base for the tube drive

I took wires from the original tube base to the new tube base.

The new screen mounting, Just needs painting black

Kept the monitor electronics?  Did you do a cap kit beforehand?
Title: Re: My Cab Project
Post by: Avinitlarge on August 25, 2009, 07:23:17 pm
I did use the original PCB. I havnt fitted a cap kit but Im going to. I dont think there is a cap kit available in the UK so I will have to make up my own kit. I was a TV engineer for 9 years, The bloke that I worked for is still going so I will pop down to him and get the caps.

Sounds like a plan..

It will most likely solve any color shift or bleeding you may be experiencing on the CRT.. although it sounds like it's looking pretty good as is.

Ive just ordered a cap kit and width coil from Bob Roberts. To be honest, I dont think it needs a cap kit, Im just fitting one whilst it is all in bits. I needed to change the width coil as I fried mine. I used a metal allen key cos I couldnt fine my plastic one. It got really hot and melted, It still works, I just cant adjust the width.

Just a quick update. Ive filled and primered one side, The top and the front of the cabinet. once the other side is finished, Im taking it to be painted. I need to get the artworks, CP, T Molding and controls sorted out next.

I paid £57.99 for the cabinet as Ive said before. Ive just sold the game board on ebay for £52.07!!! I was stunned when it sold for that, I was expecting £20 or so. Thats a big chunk towards the new buttons, Joysticks and Minipac.

The cabinet is painted and back at home. Ive started to rebuild it, Didnt get very far though. Ive ordered 2 new locks and the T Molding too.

Im gonna try and get more done tomorrow. Fitting the new Labtech speakers is the next job.

Ive got the speakers fitted. One of the satellite speakers had the volume control and power switch mounted in it. I shortened the cables from the main sub/power supply then mounted the PCB on the top of the coin counter. The satellite speakers are only small but sound really well. I also fitted the marquee light whilst I was at it.

Ive just got the computer mounted, It was a tight fit but I got it in there. I had to make a bit it a frame to hold it in place though. The bulb holder for the coin reject came yesterday so I fitted that too.

This is as far as it gets for a while. Ive got other things my money has to go on, Birthdays, Christmas etc.

The T Molding came today, That is fitted. Ive built it back up so Nothing gets lost or damaged.

I need to get the CP, Screen bezel and marquee sorted. I also need to finish sorting the frontend out. I am using maximus arcade. Apart from that, Its done.

The Marquee in the picture is just a paper test one, Nothing permenent.

I decided to finish my USB gamepad hack today. Now all 3 buttons work, The 1 & 2 player buttons work and the coin mech works as it should. Dont think I will bother with a mini-pac or IPac. When I add the new controls, I will just use another hacked gamepad. Its easy enough to do and its alot cheaper. I just wish I had enough money to get it totally finished. :hissy:

Ive just replaced the coin validator. The coin Validator I had fitted wouldnt accept the new 50p. I used my old fruit machine coin validator with the coin seperator removed, altered the routing plug, Converted it from a top entry with bottom reject to a front entry with front reject . It now accepts 10p 20p 50p & £1.

This is the very last thing for definate. Fitted an industrial relay to turn the Monitor, Marquee and Sound on. They all come on and go off when the computer is powered up and down. I just get a horrible cracking sound from the speakers when it is powered down, I need to take a look at that.
I also tidied the wiring up a bit.

Ok, Maybe the relay wasnt the last part. Ive fitted a power button. Ive mounted it on the back so the kids cant get to it easily. It is wire in parallel with the power button on the computer. It also has a 2 pin plug so I can disconnect it if I need to remove the computer.

Ive also made up a dummy control panel from a spare piece of MDF, Joystick and buttons. I had. I just wanted to see how it looked and felt. I am happy with it.

BTW, This wont be my proper control panel, Just a Tester.

Ive finally made the CP. I thought I had bought everything. Today I realised I had only bought one joystick  :censored:

The Buttons are IL from Ultimarc, The JS is a Happ Comp from Gremlin and the Wire came from Swallow AM.

The 2 Stainless Support bracket were made at Anchor Stainless in Sheffield (The home of Stainless Steel) by my mate that owed me a favor

Red and black euro cabs for the win!  ;D

Yours is looking great. You got a bargain too!

I like what you have done with the CP, very tidy  :applaud:

Mine has the same kind of CP opening mechanism/PCB mounting board. I was thinking of making a new CP for mine but its a fabricated steel job and it would be a ---smurfette--- to reproduce. I probably could do it but the layout isn't too bad. Its only three buttons but I'm only using it for Jamma and Neo Geo MVS carts. The spacing is a little brutal but I think I will cope. I think I'll just get the CPO reprinted as its a little beat up.

Great job on all of the wiring/electronics, you definitely know what you are doing :)
