Title: Ordering my joys/buttons, some questions!
Post by: OC_Ryan on August 08, 2009, 02:10:26 pm

Hey everyone,

I've gotten everything setup for my cabinet, and I'm about to order joysticks and buttons, but I could use some advice.

Joysticks: What is the need for an 8 way joystick? I'm only going to be playing MAME roms (for now), not emulating anything else. I'm mainly looking at Happ joysticks, so I've got the choice between the Ultimate, Competition, and Super joysticks. Anyone have any advice there? I'm not very sure of the differences between them other then the 4way vs 8way deal.

Pushbuttons: As far as these go, I'm also looking at Happ, and there (again) is three different types. Ultimate pushbutton with microswitch, Pushbutton with horizontal microswitch, and the competition pushbutton. Again, could somebody really outline the major differences between these and their experience with them?

Thanks everyone! Getting close on my cabinet, I'll be posting a new project announcement soon with some pics.  :)

well i dont know about the ultimate joysticks but i've heard nothing but bad about them.

the supers and competitions people seem to like. the supers some people complain about to sensitive in the diagonals, i had a pair on a tekken 2 cab i bought.. and i did'nt care a lot for them.

the competitions seem to be the closest to how i remember the dedicated mortal kombats being (although im not sure thats what was used, they feel slightly off), so thats what i'll be going with but thats me personally.

for push buttons, i dont know about the ultimates, but if im not mistaken the competitions are of convex design.. some people like these personally i like the feel of classic concave (where the button is sunk in the middle a little) thats the standard push button with horizontal microswitch.

i dont think there is a performance difference as they all use micro switches i think it's probably a matter of personal choice on how they feel.

Thanks for the input.

Looks like I'll be going with the Super Joy and the standard push button with the horizontal microswitch. Thanks for pointing out the concave vs convex design on the buttons Beretta, I'm with you on liking the old style feel and would have been pretty disappointed if I got the buttons in and they we the convex style.

Now if I can only decide on the colors...
