Title: Happ UGCI?
Post by: jleb on August 06, 2009, 04:02:05 pm
My company is working on a project and has been provided Happ UGCI boards to build several control panels.  Has anybody here worked with the UGCI and be able to provide some help with configuration and/or programming?  This is not actually for an arcade machine, but for museum exhibits focused for children's use.  We want to have controls with joysticks and buttons, and if the buttons could be lit and programmatically controlled, that would be great.

If the UGCI is a poor choice, what would you recommend instead?  The client isn't set on this, but they know Happ as a brand, so there will have to be good info to convince them.

Thanks in advance.

It's a little expensive for most people here, but I've read a couple people who've used it.  The one thing it has that the normal interfaces talked about here is the whatchdog timer; I'm not sure if you want that or not.  If you want lighting, I think you'd also need the daughterboard.

For more from people here, I'd recommend the the LED-wiz (http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=76_81&products_id=306) (might need 2 per computer if two joysticks + buttons?) or maybe U-HID (http://www.u-hid.com/).  The LED-wiz does lights and one gamepad inputs; no mouse, though, so you might need an opti-wiz if you want a trackball, too.  The U-HID is a little more flexible than the LED-wiz, but I'm not sure if as many people has used its LED outputs yet.

Not saying the UGCI is bad; just might be more expensive and overkill for the job.  But having a big company (haps/suzo) behind the product might tip the museum, though: the products above are products of different very small companies (apit both with great support).
