Title: Smallest arcade buttons?
Post by: LeedsFan on August 06, 2009, 01:40:39 pm
What are the smallest arcade quality buttons generally available? I'm looking for some buttons that take up less CP space than standard Happs etc. as I'm building a bartop. The smallest I've found are the Sanwa OBSF 24. Is this it? Of course they must be arcade quality.... I'm not just gonna install any old buttons just because they fit.  ;)

What about the old atari volcano buttons?

Those aren't good for general gameplay. That's why I didn't recommend the Sanwa 18s or 20s. I think the 24 is about as good as you're going to get and still maintain arcade feel.

I bought a couple of these for admin buttons. They have a great feel and they are certainly small (maybe too small for your use) but there are a couple of issues.

They're only about an inch long, so if you're going to use 3/4" or larger for the panel its gonna require some extra routing. The second thing is that I think they're only available in black.

Oh, there might be an issue since you're not in the US. Not sure though.

Loads of us build bar-tops with no problems; just how small are you planning on going? A regular 1-player, 6-button arrangement only takes up around 9" x 4" after all.

I'm building a replica Donkey Kong half size bartop (it's in the projects section). The CP measures 294 x 103 mm. With the scaled down DK artwork I really do struggle to get any kind of arcade buttons in there.

I'm thinking of using non-arcade buttons for P1 and P2 as they aren't "play" buttons. Something like what TOK posted may be ideal (even though they are black). Then I can just get a Sanwa OBSF-24 in there for the Jump button. Having said that the "Jump" decal within the artwork will need to be enlarged to accommodate the 27mm radius button.... but it will just fit. I was gonna fit an extra "action" button on there for two button games like Scramble, 1943 etc.etc. but I may need to knock that idea on the head now that I see what area I'm restricted to.

Out of interest what is the outside diameter of the button casing/bezel on top of the CP? The specs say it mounts in 0.5" hole but doesn't say the size above panel.

Gremlin Solutions supply them in the UK http://gremlinsolutions.co.uk/ordersanwapushbuttons.php , I've bought some yellow ones from them in the past.

The Sanwa Buttons OBS-24B may be easier to install in wood though they'll still require some routing or drilling.
