Joust?
Joust is Horizontal... but the controls work. What do you guys think - should I include a few horizontal games in a vertical cab that work with the controls? Tapper and Tetris are others I love. I could also configure Chicken Shift to work by pressing Left and Right on the joystick...
-
return of the invaders
amidar
looks like a pretty good list..and thanks for making it..i'm hoping to end up with a 4way vertical classics cabinet before too long here as well
to benevolance...
Joust does not have a vertical oriented monitor. Joust 2 does, but it requires 2 buttons

Something wrong there: Karate Champ (US) is on that list. Karate Champ is 2 4-way sticks.
-
yes, some grains of salt are required.
romlister is merely a data mining (search engine) tool and:
<control name="Dual 4-way Joysticks">
<constant name="doublejoy4way"/>
</control>
matches
<control name="4-way Joystick">
<constant name="joy4way"/>
</control>
when you're just searching for "joy4way"
I'm just about to release a new version of romlister; I'll modify the default search criteria for that. thanks for bringing that to my attention.
-
Thanks NOP. Romlister is great. I guess the question I really want to ask is what out of this list am I missing on mine that is FUN and worth having on a cab (it will actually get played)?? I supposed I could add these marginally OK games:
- Circus Charlie (Selectable level set 1)
- Congo Bongo
- Gals Panic (doubtful - this is for the kids!)
- Lock'n'Chase
- Radar Scope
- Space Invaders Part II
- Super Qix (don't you need 2 buttons for this?)
Thoughts???
-
I think loco-motion is fun.
Pandora's Palace is also a great game. Oddly enough, i don't see it in the list I generated, and that's a little scary to me-need to investigate why that got dropped.
Sometimes i like adding games that are more of a wtf? than fun to play, streaking and disco #1 certainly qualify there.
super qix does claim to be 1 button, according to controls.dat
There are also some horizontal games that work pretty well in vertical mode on a true arcade monitor. You just have to find games that while horizontal, have a square enough resolution to be workable on a vertical.
Perhaps trying any of these as well:
Arm Wrestling
Avalanche
Blasto
Blockade
Blue Shark
Canyon Bomber
Chameleon
Clowns (rev. 2)
Comotion
D-Day
Dead Eye
Diamond Run
Don Den Mahjong [BET] (Japan)
Flicky (128k Ver.)
Flyball
Frogs
Guided Missile
Gun Fight
Gypsy Juggler
Hana Awase (Flower Matching)
Hang-On Jr.
Head On (2 players)
Head On 2
Hustle
Idol Janshi Su-Chi-Pie Special
Lovely Cards
Mahjong
Mahjong Channel Zoom In
Mahjong Derringer (Japan)
Mahjong Diplomat [BET] (Japan)
Mahjong Friday (Japan)
Mahjong Kakumei
Mahjong Kakumei 2 - Princess League
Mahjong Studio 101 [BET] (Japan)
Mario Bros. (US)
Megatack
Minesweeper
Minesweeper (4-Player)
Minivader
NATO Defense
Ojanko Club (Japan)
Pastel Gal (Japan 851224)
Penguin-Kun Wars (US)
Pirate Ship Higemaru
Raiders5
River Patrol (bootleg)

Sea Wolf
Space Encounters
Star Fire (set 1)
Star Fire 2
Street Football
Thief
Time Tunnel
Tonton [BET] (Japan)
Truco-Tron
Warlords
Zoo Keeper (set 1)
edit: here's the pandora's palace issue:
<control name="4-way Joystick">
<constant name="joy4way"/>
</control>
<input players="2" control="joy8way" buttons="1" coins="3"/>
So controls.dat says it's a 4way, MAME says it's an 8way. MAME seems to do this a lot. I think the default controls are 8way, and the devs sometimes forget to update the xml data...

OK, here is the "unofficial" list:
- Donkey Kong
- Donkey Kong II
- Donkey Kong Jr.
- Donkey Kong 3
- Pac-man
- Ms. Pac-man
- Jr. Pac-man
- Super Pac-man
- Pac & Pal
- Pac-man Plus
- Frogger
- Dig Dug
- Mr. Do!
- Mr. Do!'s Castle
- Galaxian
- Galaga
- Galaga '88
- Crush Roller
- Space Invaders
- Ladybug
- Burger Time
- Mappy
- Pengo
- Journey
- Circus Charlie
- Radar Scope
I have also added "Tapper" to the list even though it is a horizontal game... I'm not sure about it but my friends really love this one. I'm also tempted to add Tetris and Klax and some other 4-way, one button horizontal games. What are people's thoughts on this?
-
I would think that Gaplus would be playable with a 4-way, even though it's an 8-way game.
-
OK, I messed around and updated the list one more time. The deadline is tonight (party tomorrow) so if anyone has any other input now is the time to share!
- Donkey Kong
- Donkey Kong II
- Donkey Kong Jr.
- Donkey Kong 3
- Pac-man
- Ms. Pac-man
- Jr. Pac-man
- Super Pac-man
- Pac & Pal
- Pac-man Plus
- Frogger
- Dig Dug
- Mr. Do!
- Mr. Do!'s Castle
- Galaxian
- Galaga
- Galaga '88
- Crush Roller
- Space Invaders
- Ladybug
- Burger Time
- Mappy
- Pengo
- Journey
- Circus Charlie
- Tetris (cocktail)
- Tapper (horizontal)
I added Tapper because that game rules. I added the cocktail version of Tetris because it fills the horizontal screen and the playfield is larger than if I put the horizontal version in there. I also deleted Radar Scope because that game blows.

I still enjoy Mario Bros and Alpine Ski. Classics IMO.
-
despite it technically already being in the list, my mom LOVES speedup MsPac, granted she liked the original more, but she thinks the speed up is a blast to play.

Didn't see Rally-X on that list
-
Can I incorrectly suggest Joust one more time? :D
I don't see why you couldn't install some horizontal games on there. I'd do it. Is it really much different than installing vertical games on a horizontal cab?
-
What about
Timber
The Glob
Not outrageously popular games but I like them both
-
NIBBLER!

Joust 2 is vertical, if a vert Joust title really needs to be on there. People say its not as good as Joust. I don't like either one of them, so I can't really give accurate commentary.
-
Jumping Jack is pretty fun and very challenging. It's incorrectly listed as having two buttons. But it's one button, 4 way, vertical.
-
Q*Bert rocks...
So does Juno First...
I also have to 2nd Nibbler...
-
what about Gyruss? MAWS lists it as 8way, but it should only be 2 way, which would work well with your cabinet...plus it is just awesome
-
KLAX works well on vertical
-

Gyruss IS 8-way.
-

Huh? Gyruss is most assuredly an 8 way game...
-
These are great suggestions!
I installed Jumping Jack and played it a few times - I can tell I'm going to like this one.
I also installed Nibbler but it goes like 100 miles an hour. Does this happen to anyone else or is this just normal?
Popeye is giving me slow-down which is extremely odd.
Juno First is awesome but that is 2 buttons and 8-way if I'm not mistaken.
I put Joust in there too - great game.
-

all you do is move in a circle...i just fired up Gyruss on the cabinet here at work, and it plays perfectly fine with the dedicated 4 way stick
-
So then what about your 2-way statement?
-

i'm clearly an idiot
but it is fully playable on a 4 way stick

i'm clearly an idiot
Around here it's be expected from time to time. I know that's my answer quite frequently.

D0h... but it can easily be played with a 4-way. Well. Maybe not. :)

Yah... try to get the angles correctly at each stage. I'd say it's 90% playable... but it's missing "something". Much like Juno First would be.
-
I'll try Gyruss tonight and see for myself assuming I can ever figure out why MAME stopped saving high scores (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=95524.0)!
-
Bagman
Mario Bros. (2way)
I guess Arkanoid could even be done if you were so inclined
-
I guess Arkanoid could even be done if you were so inclined
No. Just no.
-
Here's what I have on my new Vertical cabinet:
Amidar
Bagman
Bomb Jack (not sure if this is 8-way but it plays fantastically with 4-way - My high score is 76,060)
Burgertime
Burnin Rubber
Carnival
Circus Charlie
Dig Dug
Dig Dug II
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong 3
Donkey Kong Jr.
Faster, Harder, More Challenging Q*Bert
Frogger
Galaga '88
Galaga (Fast Shoot)
Galaga
Galaxian
Galaxian Turbo
Gaplus
Journey
Jr. Pac-Man
Kangaroo
Lady Bug
Mappy
Mr. Do!
Mr. Do's Castle
Ms. Pac-Man
Pac & Pal
Pac-Mania
Pengo
Phoenix
PuckMan
Q*Bert
Qix
Satan's Hollow
Sinistar
Space Invaders
Space Invaders Part II
Super Pac-Man
Super Space Invaders '91
Time Pilot (playable with a 4 way, although it's an 8-way - Hi Score 86,400)
I listed my high scores to prove that the games play just fine with a 4-way and hi scores are indeed achievable.
I just tried Jumping Jack and like it so I will add that to my arcade soon.
DeLuSioNaL29

Pooyan
Roller Paint
Speed Coin
-
86,000 is a high score on Time Pilot? With an 8-way I can get close to that in the first 2 levels. While certainly playable I'd imagine, it surely isn't as precise as with an 8 way. Time Pilot would have rocked with a spinner though.
-
Roadfighter has become one of my favs on my cocktail. I had no idea it existed until then.
Depending on your front end. Have a list generated by romlister that includes all vert games matching your controls. You'll find some gems you never knew where there.
You can still have a list of your fav games as you main list.
-
Time Pilot would have rocked with a spinner though.
+1
Once my cocktail wiring is done, I'm going to dig up the old spinner Time Pilot thread and get that added to my gameslist. To me it seems that Time Pilot and spinner controls just makes sense.
-
Roadfighter has become one of my favs on my cocktail. I had no idea it existed until then.
Roadfighter is one of the best driving games ever IMO. Hard to imagine a driving game with a 2 way joystick could be that good.
-
Roadfighter is listed as 2 buttons - is that not right?
-
:(

No. 2 buttons should be right. Accelerate and Brake.
-
I've been tweaking and refining my list today and I'm up to about 40 games. I added a few more horizontal games - Joust, Asteroids and Chicken Shift and they seem to play pretty good. Gyruss also works but the turns aren't as smooth around the circle unless you change direction on the 4-way before getting exactly N, S, E or W. I'll have to play for a while and see if I can live with it.
Some games had to have their controls tweaked - Chicken Shift usually uses 2 buttons and no joy so I mapped them to left and right as well as the P2 start button and "jump". I think I like the buttons better because you can't press both directions simultaneously in a game. Also, games like Satan's Hollow work but I had to map "Shields" to down on the joystick (since you only move left and right). It seems OK but now you can't use shields while moving which may or may not have a big impact on the game. It's playable, but not perfect. I'll know more in a few weeks after testing...
-
I have a dedicated Super Pacman MAME (vertical monitor, 4 way, 1 button) and these NEED to be on your list:
Pooyan
Qix

I added Pooyan today but isn't Qix a 2-button game? One draws blue and the other draws orange, right?
-
Not sure about the color, but I play it with use the joystick, slow draw, hold button down, fast draw. Works fine, but now I may need to test it out on my main MAME machine which has the 1,454,454,677 buttons on it.
