I have hacked a few game pads.
ghosting is not a problem with game pads.

question:? Why do you need 8 of them?
most people here will question why game pad hack at all ?
I still like them if I have one just sitting around. I like to tinker

If GGG sales them ther fine to work with

You sound like me.
slow down. build 1 at a time or you will end up with 0 at the end.
no kidding. Here I sit ... 10 years later and no cab!
many built .... but as life moves on.... one thing after the other.... your half finished projects get kicked to the side.
finish 1 at a time.

to show my point ... check out my link on a MS PAC
 daywane's MS PAC  (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=34776.0)
notice the year ....2005!
still not done.... Had it running at least 5 times.... That PC is not even around any more
learn from my mistake!!!!

Lets take this from the top.
4 cabs. What do you want to do to them?
Home build? or redo 4 ready built cabs?
What games?
I see a DIVE IN HEADS FIRST!
In my neck of the woods , we call it chomping at the bit
I had up to 7 pcs of crap running at 1 time.

gamepads as a rule dont have ghosting issues.

i bought 2 off ebay recently that look to be the same or very similar to the ones at GGG.

they're cheap chinese gamepads.. they actually suck for their intended use, but for hacking they work great and are very easy to hack.. i've also hacked a few playstation pads and these cheap chinese pads are almost a pleasure to hack in comparison... very simple circuits to follow and large traces to solder to.

why would anyone wanna go with game pads? price.. none of the issues a keyboard hack entails with a lot less cost per input.. compared to say a ipac or even a keywiz.

you do loose some inherent flexibility but i will definitely be going this route again for other smaller projects, mame or other wise.

if you dont mind spending some time with a sodering iron and neatness is'nt the most important thing i can absolutely recommend hacking some cheap pads, i mounted mine to some scrap MDF which will then be mounted in the cabinet, im planing on adding some terminal blocks to make wiring easier/neater.

The GGG gamepad is solid for hacking. I've heard no problems from anyone that has used it.

Well I am building one of these for me as a demo unit and selling the rest. Already have an order for 2 mabey 3..  The games will be up to the owner of the cab to get  legalities you know <wink>.... If i can get all the same parts then it is as easy as an assembly line to install.  I am in the middle right now of weeding out the games I want from about 20 gig...However I am at a loss to find the chd`s for the .132 mame releases and the old chd`s wont work....I now have a garage full of cabinates and crane machines.. I have also restored a Golden Tee 98.. Its in the den looking pretty right now.
