Title: any trick to crimping wires into a disconnect

Just put the wire in and squeeze the bejesus out of it right?

Well...yeah!  It's even easier when you use a crimper.

The only real trick is to make sure you have the right size disconnect for the wire you are using.  Using a blue disconnect on 22ga wire wire make for a sloppy connection that won't hold well.  Generally speaking:

22-16ga wire = red disconnects
16-14ga wire = blue disconnects
12-10ga wire = yellow disconnects (I can't imagine anyone has ever used these on an arcade cabinet!)

I had a really hard time getting the 22 gauge to stay in the red connector.  I finally started folding the tip of the wire in half, and I didn't have any problems at all.

I had the same problem on mine. I'm using thermostat wire (20ga IIRC) and found that using a better crimper helped me out.

I've used 22G wire with the blue ended connectors, and have had no problems whatsoever.  I've even given them the 'tug' test.

Previously, I had tried doing this with just a pair of pliers, with less than great results.  Ever since I started using a 'real' crimper (which came with a box of connectors I bought years ago) I've never had a problem.  I actually only started using the crimper just a little while ago, due to being really stiff.  A little WD-40 fixed that.

The size of the barrel on disconnects varies a bit by manufacturer, I've noticed.  Since you had good luck with 16-14ga disconnects on 22ga wire, then I imagine that is more of the exception rather than the rule.  The manufacturer has recommended wire sizes for a reason, I suppose.  :)

That, and I squash the $#!7 out of it, just to be sure.

Let's not forget that crimp connectors should only be used with stranded wire! Solid wire won't work reliably, don't bother with it.
