It's called a BIOGun.. here's the URL i found.
http://www.gocybershop.ca/product_details.asp?ID=664
Looks interesting, and i do love shooting games :)
BTW This wouldn't work with a TV as the monitor, would it?
-
Never seen it before. Whether it will work with MAME depends on what technology it uses to register a hit on the screen. If it works like a mouse click then it should theoretically work. No guarantees, though. It hooks up via the PS2 port, tohugh. Don't know what that's all about. The only other option on the market that works for MAME is USB.
It's certainly a better-looking gun than the ACt-Labs, tough (with a lil paint). I'm curious to know how this works out! Couldn't play 2-player, though, even if it did work. Not with PS2.
-
Found a USB gun that isn't from Act Labs. Connects via USB and VGA passthrough (like Act Labs).

Can we get some officiall U_Rebelscum opinions in here??? :D
-
Here is a better link for that last gun I mentioned. It's cheaper than the Act Labs gun, looks better than the Act Labs gun, and connects the same. Plus it has a reload peddle.

what does it take to make a USB gun work with MAME? different drivers / design? All the guns mentionned so far say they are USB, come with a VGA adapter.... sounds like they are all using the same basic components.. Hmm.
-
Well the Bio Gun doesn't use USB. It uses a combination of keyboard and mouse PS2 ports.
To work with MAME it must support mouse emulation. Neither of these really say whether they do or not. They sort of dance around the issue.
If the Bio Gun does support mouse emulation, though, it only supports 1 gun because of the methosd of connection. This other gun with the USB may support 2 mice.
Both guns work in games that I think would typically require mouse emulation, but they don't mention what operating systems are compatible or anything.
So we are left with a bunch of maybes.
Both are cheaper and better-looking than the Act Labs guns, though.
-
Well I did some research on the Act Labs gun, and I'm pretty sure that both of these other guns will work. (That's not a 100%, though.)
However, the Bio Gun (my favorite of the two) will only support one player. This other more generic one could possibly support 2 in Win98.
-
Hmmm I'm definently interested in this "PC Virtual Gun", and the cost from Lik-sang would be just

You could try posting a question on the FAQ section of Lik-Sang's website. However I did this for one of their products (VGA adaptor) a few months ago and it was ignored.
One of the FAQs suggests that the gun won't work with MAME. However it was posted some time ago (4/12/2002) so it might be worth asking for an update.
-
I don't see how it could support both hotd1 and hotd2. That's risky business ordering one. How about you get one and tell us how it turns out! ;D
-
I checked out the online FAQ for the PC Virtual gun from the second link from AlanS17. Here is what they say:
Will this work as a mouse emulator for non-light gun games, or maybe as a way to remotely click around your desktop? (2002-05-17)
No unfortunatley this is not possible. (2002-05-17)
Can this be used for MAME? act labs USB gun can,but it is ugly! (2002-07-29)
It is possible that in the future this gun will be supported within MAME. Please check www.mame.net for news (2002-12-04)
-
I guess that answers that question!
-
I know someone who got one of these... DOES'NT work in MAME. And if you ask me, nor will it. Nice gun though...
-
What about the Bio Gun? FAQ says it's mouse emulation-compatible.
You could only use one, but it looks like it would work. It's pretty, too. My favorite for looks.

From the Lik Sang website faw concerning the Bio Gun:
What screen resolution will the gun work with? (2002-04-16)
The gun should work at any resolution as it includes a VGA card adapter that interfaces with the gun and the PC. (2002-04-19)
Does this gun support/work for MAME games? What does the PC detect it as? (2002-07-31)
Mame32 v.61 and later support PC light guns. To enable light gun support, go to Options -> Default Options -> Controllers -> check the "enable lightgun input" box. (2002-12-04)
Will this gun work on a Television (TV OUT) or only a CRT Monitor. I know the ACT Labs gun will only work on a CRT Monitor. (2002-12-18)
This gun will not work on the tv out of your pc. it will only work on your monitor, since your pc cannot register any shots fired at the tv. (2002-12-18)
Does this gun fuction as a mouse or a joystick? (2003-02-06)
This gun functions as a mouse. (2003-04-19)
Can you use 2 light guns on the same pc and use them to play MAME? (2003-04-12)
Actually you can but the thing is the program you intend to use it for must support light gun support for multiple players... (2003-04-22)
I don't know who answered these questions or how accurate the answers are, but I guess we would just have to see.
Thinking about it now, I suppose it might be remotely possible for a PS2 gun to work in dual mode if the buttons were programmable and assignable to different gun so that each gun had totally distinct buttons (Like if gun1 had mouse buttons 1,2, and 3 and gun1 had mouse buttons 4,5,and 6).

If these are true for the bio gun, it should work in mame. Using two won't work, ATM.
Just to backup the point, I also heard a couple say the PC virtual gun does not work in mame.
-
Just to chime in, the guns that support mouse emulation will work, but only to an extent. I used to have to use my old Act-Labs that way to [try to] play MAME. They were heavily dependant on you using high, standard screen resolutions like 640x480 @ 32-bit or better.. when you tried to use them with the non-standard resolutions MAME pops out, it would totally lose its accuracy. Also, whenever you hit the edge of the screen, it would come 'uncalibrated' :(
I would hope the other guns handle this better, but wouldn't think they're any different..
But, if anyone has any success with them, would love to know..? The one that has a VGA passthru sounds promising (maybe whoever made it will actually support theirs.. *coughAct-Labs* :P)..
-
Anybody want to go buy a Bio Gun and tell me how it works???
-
Just to chime in, the guns that support mouse emulation will work, but only to an extent.
Isn't this the method the Act Labs guns use, anyways? I thought the difference wasn't in the technology but in the quality. I just figured not all mouse-emulating guns are created equal.
Those old Act Labs guns really were crap. Gave it a try here on my home computer and it didn't work worth anything. Plus they connected through the game port. How accurate can a mouse be like that?

I thought the old ActLab gameport (GS) lightguns were joystick-type lightguns. I think they had a joy-2-mouse proggie, but those suck for gaming. So basically, the old ActLab gameport games were not mouse lightguns. (Correct me if I'm wrong, I never had that gun.) And that's why the sucked.
-
Yes, they were joystick guns. That's how they connect to the gameport. There was supposed to be some basic mouse emulation over the gameport, though. (At least according to some sources.) In theory it was supposed to work. In actuality it didn't even come close.
U_Rebelscum, if you want my guns for testing purposes of any kind if you think they might help... You're welcome to them.
(But if you get them working in WinXP somehow I want them back. ;) )
-
Here is a link to the Bio Gun on the Lik Sang website if anybody in interested in that one. Paint it red and it would be damn pretty (if it works).
-
ummm, i have 2 actlabs TV guns on preorder, and yall are scaring me....
that is just the old ones right ? the new are actual mouse emu (USB) so they work well im hoping ??
-
I've never heard any complaints from the TV guns.
-
I have the DC version of the BIO gun that I got as part of a reward package for helping Lik-Sang (Ken is the dude's name, I believe) out with some domain-name squatters a year back. The gun is terrible. Everything else (GBA/Flash Advance etc) worked fine, just not the gun. Keep in mind that this was a wireless gun though, so it may have just been some major suckage on the part of the IR receiver.
-
You know the guy? You think you can get him to "donate" a gun to U_Rebelscum for testing purposes??? If it gets the U_Rebelscum seal of approval I'll get one for sure. I'm sure many others would too, since it's cheaper than the Act Labs gun.
As for the quality, maybe it was a receiver problem. What exactly was the problem? Was it not registering shots or were the shots off? What was the deal?
-
Ok is there some type of videogame equivalent of the NRA that I'm not aware of? ;D Sounds like some of you guys have quite the collection...looking in AlanS17's direction... ;)
I'm really hip to the look of that BIOgun - that's what a lightgun should look like. Or that virtual gun. Basically anything but the phaser/raygun that Act-labs looks like. If you guys figure this all out I look forward to the final verdict.

The newer actlab PC USB lightguns work quite well.
The old actlab GS gameport lightguns are the ones that are having problems.
The up-and-coming actlab TV USB lightguns should work as well the other actlab USB lightgun (but also with the extra features mentioned). I haven't tested one of course, but I have pre-ordered a couple, too.
-
I doubt the BioGun is worth ordering. Im almost certain that it dosnt have a calibration system.. and thats why the original actlabs guns didnt work.
When windows switches resolutions, the gun gets out of whach.. and needs recalibration. The new actlabs guns feature a calibrtaion switch to solve this... and as far as I know... no other gun does this.

I pre-ordered one too, but good lord, how long ago was that anyway? Any status of if/when it's coming out?

I think it's mid August ATM; about a four or five month wait. :(
Not happy about the delays, but not that surprised. It also happens too often elsewhere for me to get mad about it. (Can you Daikatana (http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=1999-11-22)?)
Plus I already have two PC USB lightguns working fine. ;D
