Title: Nintendo NES coffee table
Post by: razorsharp192 on July 26, 2009, 06:11:40 pm
hi guys, i've got a custom NES coffee table i made and havent got room for it, so i'm selling it, but thought i'd post here so you guys can have a look (plus i cant post in the buy/sell forum for some reason... i've been pointed in this direction from another forum. here it is:

this is the only one i've ever seen, there was a guy that made one on the net but his was more of a chest than a proper coffee table. this one is a nice (exact to scale) coffee table. its made from mdf, painstakingly sanded, smoothed, and painted. computer cut vinyl graphics on top with 3d buttons and d-pad. The glass is 10mm reenforced, custom cut specifically for this table, this is a complete custom made table (the only bought things were the legs!). unfortunately i've got no where to put it so it has to go :( it took literally weeks to finish and is a really nice piece, nice and solid with a fair weight to it. I'm looking for offers, but i'm not going to let this go cheap, as i'd rather keep it. In one of the pics there's an actual nes pad on the table, to give you an idea of size. The dimensions are approx 97.5cm x 43cm x 27cm. I'm located in Lincolnshire (UK), pickup preferred but i can arrange a courier if needed (although it wont be cheap)

DAMN!!!  that has to be about the coolest thing i have ever seen.  i'd love to have something like that, but i'm from the US and am not paying for shipping something like that overseas.

good luck though, that is awesome

I agree, that is awesome and would love to have it or make one like it.  Shipping to the US would probably be out of my budget.

You wouldn't happen to have the plans that you used for that would you?

That's excellent. I remember someone else making one of these and although pointless, it was also functional. I must say yours is better as it's lower (as I'd never use it as a controller!).

I'm from the UK, but I'm good for coffee tables! I hope you get a decent price for it though. Was it "It's either me or the table"?

That would be a hard decision.  It's a bloody nice table, after all.

Are you in line for a sweetener, for agreeing to part with it ?

Shall she be giving you your table's-worth of fun ?    ;)

:) thanks for the comments guys. i'm really pleased with how it turned out. i just really havent got anywhere to put it (maybe i should have thought about that before building it  :lol )

regarding plans, no i havent got any plans, i didnt use any when making it, i just took measurements from a nes pad and multiplied them to make the table to scale.

havent had a single off yet! i'll be putting it on ebay later this week if i dont get any good offers, it should get a good price on there :)

PM me with how much you'd be looking for it - I live fairly locally to you - can't guarantee I'd have a space though! Fantastic design! :)

Now that IS awesome  :afro:  :applaud:

Where abouts are you in Lincolnshire? I live in Lincolnshire too :)

My [SMB coin block Wiimote tidy (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=91137.0)] would look nice on that :)

Wow, this is an amazing piece of furniture.  I'm sure it must be a great conversation piece when you have people over.

Yeap me and Severdhead are now in preperation of taking broken cabs and making a makeshift raft to sail and cut out shipping expenses to get to the UK to get that joker...

yeah...the problem is, that old MDF makes a very poor raft material...it just gets very swollen and then falls apart.  maybe if we cover it in duct tape...

True, the coffee table is just slick. thats about the neatest piece of furniture ive seen in a while.

this would be a great gift for a kid who lives in a gamer household provided he knows what a nes is.

thats not really a problem though. lots of people my age are parents now, and some lucky folks have managed to hang on to their NES and Ataris like me.

if i have kids hes definately getting that old 2600 Jr to mess with along with the new stuff. im not giving him the 2600 though if hes anything like i was and treated games rough. ill let him beat up his PS5 instead.

anyways, yeah. awesome project and great finishing.

good luck selling it.

I live in the US and could never afford the shipping. best bet is to sell it locally or put it on ebay UK.

thats just a testament to the nes though how durable it was.

i used to bounce those controllers off the walls (one even went through a window by mistake once) after the 99th time i died in a row.

that first one i got in "85 went through hel. it lasted about 4 years till it finally gave up.

the second one i got i made it a point to not treat it rough, but the analog video went bad anyway and player 2 control port stopped working. that was in 1993,

and i was in the right place at the right time. toys r us was clearing out their whole stock of NES toploaders for $30 and i didnt know it at the time but that was one of the best buys i made.

ive always babied the toploader and still have it today. i use it all the time.

Im sure you already know but its much improved over the toaster. no more blinking games.

yeah now though you can buy all kinds of nes clones. i just dont believe they have the same reliability as a real toploader. but i guess when mine goes bad, ill be in the market for a clone since the toploaders even are going on 16 - 17 years now.

thanks.

I keep coming back to this and like i said id buy it if i lived in the UK.

with that said the more i look at it i realize that you are pretty talented man you ought to make this a business.

i mean, people sold stupid beanie babies for years and years and made millions off of that.

this is a solid idea with a solid foundation. Video system furniture.

if you wanted things to really take off start making ps2 and 3 controller and system coffee tables, end tables whatever.

those kids my age that now have kids themselves will be having jr driving them nuts till they get one. Its perfect.

It really is awesome :)

Quite handy you are 1/2hr up the road too ;)

It would make an awesome topper for my coffee table. I may have a bid myself. If I don't it could be yet another project. If I did make one however it would have to be functional [a'la (http://ultra-awesome.blogspot.com/2008/05/nes-coffee-table-final-post-rah.html)].

thanks for the comments :)

i've got a few ideas in the pipeline of furniture i'd like to make. i'll see how well this one sells then i might get on with making some other ones.

i did think about making it functional like that other guys one, but didnt really see the point, it'd get used once then never again. having to take the glass on and off everytime would be too much hassle and having a wire trailing under the table would have ruined the look of it for me.

If there's a wire coming out of the back, is it to scale too?  It would look plain stupid if the controller were 4' wide but the cord were a measly 1/4".  That cord should be ~3" diameter to be right!   :afro:

And 48' long.... :o

I love this stuff, I have a NES controller rug in the works, but it's taking forever :embarassed:

I'd have to agree with you. It would just be to show that you could and then never get used again because it's so damn awkward. The amount of effort required just isn't worth it.

At least you would be able to say "yes" to every damn person that asks the question expecting you to say "no".

If I did make a functional one, like you said, it would only get used once or twice. Would it still do it though? Definitely :)
