Title: need a sugestion for a cabinet
Post by: Klingbeil on July 26, 2009, 01:49:03 pm
i've inherited a Sony KV 36HS510 - 36" WEGA CRT TV - 1080i - HDTV and the thing weighs close to 250 lbs.  it's 4:3 flat screen and i can't seem to sell it for the life of me.

so...  i've decided to use it for a MAME cabinet.  any ideas on what type i should make?  i've always liked the Centipede/Defender/Frogger style cabinets, but i think this TV is way too big for being that close to it.  possibly the 6 player X-Men style, maybe?  what do you guys think?

I have the same TV.  It is SERIOUS heavy.  I would think a showcase cab for the size.  Whatever you make - think about a frame made of 2X4's and attach the wood to the frame.  You will need a lot of support for the TV.

Can you not use it with a games console?

Those TVs were not intended to be hoisted up like in a showcase cab, I mean would think twice before making it into a showcase cab.  Also those TVs have an awesome display, ideal for Xbox 360 or the PS3.

agree showcase cab is the way to go, as large as it is you would have to make a huge cabinet to fit it in, most door ways are 36 inches or less.

whatever design i go with, i plan on using it for more than just MAME (you can see my xbox 360 in the picture).  the showcase cabinets worry me, because the sucker is just ridiculously heavy and i can see it easily tipping over.  i live in Alaska so earthquakes are quite common here.  the low center of gravity cabinets like X-Men and Gauntlet are probably better, unless someone knows of a plan for a very stable showcase design.

A dynamo showcase should be fine it has a rather large footprint that would add to the stability.

Let me also clarify the way its shown it breaks down in 3 pieces so you can get it in and out of the house easier.
There are plans out there and in them they integrate the spacer so its only two parts.

i think i'm going to have to end up designing my own for this massive lead weight of a TV

if you're good with wood and you like racers/flight how about a cockpit?

you could make the panels removable and get double duty out of it for both flight and race games..

thats something i'd like to do but im not much of a craftsmen and would be rather large.

probably no worries of earthquakes though.. and that screen would be totally kick ass in a sit down cab.

Agreed. If you are concerned about overbalancing or creating suitable mounts for a showcase, it would be great for a racer. Being a TV it also has the necessary inputs for games consoles so the better crop of arcade-style racers that arrived with fifth generation consoles and above would mean great racers and make connection very simple

oooooo...  i hadn't considered a cockpit...  that is an excellent idea!  i'm pretty good with both wood and steel.

hmmm..  now, Hard Drivin' or Star Wars style?  i can't think of any other cockpit games.

...anyone?

never seen a cockpit version of starwars, i know they made them but never seen one..

i absolutely love the hard drivin sit down, was my favorite racer of all time due to it's realistic controls.

so i'd say harddrivin if you're up for the challenge.

The fellow I got my games from has 2 Star wars games for sale the Trilogy and the racer game. They need some work but if I had the room I would get them.

I would probably try and design it to work something like this pic:

This would allow you to have a star wars style cabinet, but also allow you to play your 'xbox' games and what not in comfort.
