Title: Stern 24 - played it yesterday.
Post by: shardian on July 20, 2009, 11:11:44 am
The new movie theater in my area has a brand new 24 pinball. Me and the wife put a few bucks into it yesterday. I thought it was a very good playing pinball. Play was very fast paced and aggressive. I hardly had time to look at the DMD. The sound system was excellent. The terrorist drop targets on the playfield were cool - I didn't even know they were there until they started popping up.

The only complaints I have are the standard Stern complaints. The coils are all badly underpowered. The toys are all made of pieces of acrylic with inkjet art on them. Seriously, they couldn't source a simple jet toy? You'd think China could hook them up with a million of them cheaper than that plastic thing.

Only minor design complaints. There does not appear to be a skill shot at all. When the ball feeds from the pop bumpers, the ball will always land on the top of the right slingshot. That should have been rectified in design.
I noticed something peculiar in the rules too - normally on a multiplayer game you can steal locked balls. Not so fast on this game. The suitcase keeps track of how many balls you have personally locked. I kept encouraging my wife to steal the multiball, and was kind of disappointed when it locked the third ball and called it her 2nd. It then fed the extra ball out when it got a chance.

Overall a very solid, fun game. We played 4 rounds of 2p action, and would have happily kept playing.

Quite ironic, but I was a month too late in becoming the tech who maintained the games at this location. I might still, if the guy who has it now quits or something.

I think it's a fun game. I really like when the terrorist sniper swings out and you have to make that shot to kill him. I didn't notice any issues with flipper power, but maybe it was an adjustment issue.

The software isn't quite finished from what I understand, so rule updates and tweaks are still coming down the line.

24 is a fast paced fun game.  The sounds and the music really gets you into it.

You can steal balls from The Simpsons: Pinball Party. That game is so crazy deep I think it basically allows for anything.

Elvis allows balls to be stolen. As has been discussed over on KLOV, it is apparently a dip switch setting in many games. I prefer the option to steal locks. It adds an interactive appeal to a multiplayer game.

Ah, yeah, you can.  The garage door is usually busted on those things so I never play it.

Haha, yeah...

Those Pinball Party machines take an absolute beating on location. In a home environment they do just fine, but I have seen my fair share of rough machines out in the wild.

How can you steal them?  There's no mechanical lock on Elvis...

If I lock Ball 1 and then die, my wife will lock ball 2 on her turn. Then on my turn, I can start multiball.

What caught me off guard about 24 is, how can you NOT steal a lock when the lock is physical?
