Title: How do you turn on your TV?
Post by: sofakng on July 09, 2003, 10:42:48 pm
How are you guys turning on your TV?  I'm trying to plan ahead for when I start building my cabinet, but I was just wondering how you turn on your TV if the TV is covered by a bezel (or whatever)?

My TV sits in the corner of my lounge with all my furniture pointing at it.
I usually turn it on with my remote control.
Hope that helps.

I'm such a @$#%!    sorry.

HAHA!! (yeah right)

I use a JVC 27" and it automatically turns back on when power is restored.  You don't need to actually turn it on.

To find a TV with this feature, just go through best buy, ciruit city, wherever and unplug the TV's that are on.  Plug them back in, and if they come right back on (in s-video mode for best results) you should be gtg.

I bet it's funny when an employee comes up to ask you what you're doing.

If you can find a TV that comes on when the power does, that's probably the best option.  Otherwise these are some other options:

1) Leave the IR sensor exposed in the bezel and use the remote.
2) Hack into the TV and hook some wire from the power button to a momentary contact switch mounted on the cabinet somewhere.
3) Hack into the remote or a universal remote (preprogramed to your TV) and place the IR emitter near the TV's IR sensor.  Then hook the power button on that remote, to a cabinet mounted momentary contact switch like in #2.
4) Rig up a circuit using a relay and a small timer to momentarily close a circuit when powered up, and use that in combination with #2 or #3.  This is the most complicated option, but would eliminate the need for that momentary contact switch to turn the TV on/off.

Hope that helps.

This isn't always the best solution.  I did exactly this, got myself an RCA 27" tv that when I unplugged it it came back on.  SWEET I thought, got it home installed it in the cabinet and away I went.  however if it is unplugged for more than about 15min then it doesn't come back on :-(  so I gotta use the remote until I find a better solution.   I was thinking one of those smart strips with the tv plugged into the hot plug and when I power up the TV (via remote) everything else will come on too...

You have to unplug it long enough for the capacitors to discharge.

Pick the right TV is the easiest choice.  Toshiba TVs come on when power is resotred and stay on the same setting (s-video in) when they power on.  That is something you should test too.

I forget who it was, but someone on the board simply wedged a paperclip in beside his power button to hold it in and it worked for him to power on the TV when he restored power.  That "hack" is easily reversable and doesnt damage the TV either.

One nice thing about it, is that it does stay on the svideo setting no matter how long the power is off (i.e. unplugged).  It just won't come back on after 15min when power is restored.  I think it's like brax says the capacitor discharges and the electronic switch finally quits being on so power is restored, but the tv is in the 'off' setting.

I'm wanting to do this:
4) Rig up a circuit using a relay and a small timer to momentarily close a circuit when powered up, and use that in combination with #2 or #3.  This is the most complicated option, but would eliminate the need for that momentary contact switch to turn the TV on/off.

Has anyone tried this yet???
I'm brave enough to give this a shot myself, but I don't know jack about designing circuits. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you decide to go the dark smoked plexi route, you don't need a bezel and the remote sensor can see right through it even though you can't.

That's the easiest way, outside of a power strip and a set that remembers what it was doing at power loss.

That was me, I used a paperclip wedged along side of the power button to hold it in the "ON" position.  This disables the remote from working, but since the bezel covers the sensor this doesn't matter anyway.  It's easy to reverse too, just remove the paperclip!  I was lucky tho....my TV stays on the S-Video channel when powered off.  I didn't look for this feature or even realize some tvs don't stay on the channel they were last on.....lucky for me tho.  So make sure the TV stays on the channel you want, and get a paperclip....

Good Luck!

I rigged an arcade pushbutton to the tv remote control power button.  Then I extended the IR transmitter from the remote and placed it next to the tv.

I hit the button on the back of my arcade to power on the tv + everything else thanks to the bits limited smart  strip.

I just drilled a hole in the bezel I made and used a black grommet.  Use the remote to turn on the TV.

Well I have a nuclear powered IR diode in my remote (or soo it seems) so all I need to do is point the remote towards the tvscreen and turn it on, doesnt matter that the bezel covers the IR receiver on the TV  :D
