Title: Picked up 3 games today
Post by: shardian on July 18, 2009, 09:39:55 pm
(http://forums.arcade-museum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=11599&d=1247965607)
They are all 3 complete, but I swapped the badlands monitor into Outrun before I took pics. That's why the bezels and/or monitors are missing off of Outrun and Badlands.
They all 3 need plenty of work, but the price was right. If anyone has a steering shaft mounted gear for Outrun they would like to part with, please hook me up!

More discussion, details, and lots of pics here. I just don't have the energy right now to double post everything. I need to go Ice my arm - I hurt my shoulder moving that Outrun. For such a small cabinet, it is by far the HEAVIEST game I have ever moved. I put it right up there with a pop machine.

we're picture whores, post them and the comments will come. I followed the link to the other thread, no pix there either, lol.

Which badlands did you get? the B&W game, or the one that plays like Super Sprint?

I've never had a problem seeing photos at KLOV while logged out. I just verified this fact by manually logging out and looking.

I always loved Outrun.

slight update for the byoac only crowd.

-I have an Outrun B gear on order. Hope to have this game up and running soon.
-The Badlands PCB is apparently bad. I pulled it and tried it in my Xevious multi - which is Jamma. It made weird sounds from the speaker for 5 seconds before blowing the switching power supply. I just got a replacement pcb for cheap off ebay - with a return guarantee.
- I blew all the power in the Paperboy by plugging in the previously unplugged marquee light. No clue what happened here, and the main fuses look okay. I'll meter the fuses later.

Yesterday I got the Paperboy up and running. I swapped out the power brick for a cleaner one - this way I didn't have to repin the bad connector that caused the power shut down. After spending plenty of time troubleshooting and memorizing schematics, I narrowed my immediate problem down to a lack of +5 at the video pcb. I verified the switcher was rated for 12A, and then bypassed the ARIII and fed +5V directly to the video board from the switcher. The game powered up, and after a test mode and tuning the monitor, I have a perfectly playing paperboy! The way my repair luck has been going, I was almost sure adding the +5 would greet me with a whole slew of new issues with the boards. What a relief! The best part - I haven't had to spend a penny on parts for Paperboy.

This has turned out to be my wife's grail game. I could hardly keep her off of it yesterday.

Badlands update: still waiting on the new pcb. The ebay guy just shipped it today. I did get in a pile of power supplies to replace the dead one. The monitor is still dead, even though I thought I had narrowed the problem down to a visibly bad capacitor in the HV shutdown circuit. I have to order a rebuild kit.

Outrun update: I got in the new B gear and installed it. The steering mechanism is 100% now. I pulled a pot from a Champ Sprint pedal assembly, but it turns out the atari pots have slightly larger diameter shaft than the outrun pot. Darnit!! Luckily, an awesome member at KLOV is hooking me up with a complete outrun pot assembly. I'll have this game up and running as soon as the pot comes in.

That's a nice pickup... what was the source?

local laundromat operator. Contrary to what you would think - he was never an arcade op. He picked a load of games up a few years ago, and they have been steadily breaking down since.

Nice.  Listed ad, through a contact, or just contacting the owner?

Contact - Wade. We had been meaning to check the games out for months, but it just never happened. I finally decided to go look myself - mainly just so I could see how crappy they were, dash my pipe dream, and stop thinking about them.

Excellent project cabs ! Will be watching the restorations eagerly ! :)

Paperboy is very hard to find here. I also never really liked it on any home system, BUT I also didn't like Centipede on any home system....... :D

Badlands......I think I missed playing that at the UK Arcadebarn meet, looks like a really fun game. Games with two steering wheels are always cool IMHO :D

I have never found a Paperboy either.  It's one of the few rasters I would buy at this point.

Me and my wife played paperboy alot on NES. The arcade version is vastly superior. It also seems the papers are much harder to aim in the arcade version - they seem to change trajectory in relation to your speed.

I am excited to get the badlands running. It was really the game I wanted more than the others.

This evening I installed a new pot in the Outrun, and it is working 100% too. After adjusting the monitor a bit more, it has a great picture just like the Paperboy.

I'm still waiting on the Badlands PCB.

PCB came, and it had some caps busted off. I am still in the process of fixing it and getting it tested.

I did order some new grips for the Paperboy. Original grips cost $40. Ouch! Me and the wife really don't like the original grips anyways - they are not comfortable at all. I found some nice NOS BMX grips on ebay with a nice shade of blue. Here are some pics installed via cell phone camera. Mine and the wife's scores immediately went up several thousand immediately with new grips.

Funny how a little thing like a grip can make big differences, Congrats again on some cool old games

Yeah, those original grips are ---smurfin--- heinous. Like they raided some old cheese-ass Schwinn hoard. Or worse. Those real grips you got look like Comp 2s.

Original grips were manufactured by Hunt Wilde. Hunt Wilde was mostly known for making little kid bikes and trikes.

I'm 100% satisfied with the new grips. The only way they could have been better was if they were blue/yellow checkerboard.

I fixed the game pcb and it tested fine. I then ordered a Bob Roberts deluxe monitor rebuild kit, and rebuilt the monitor chassis. Put it all back together yesterday with some great assistance from my arcade loving wife. The game plays great. I can officially say all three games are fully working now. All still need minor work of course, but I'd rather have a game with issues than a few 300lb paper weights.
