This has been bugging me for a while, but nobody's brought it up, so I'm hoping there's some obvious solution that everybody but me knows. ;)
Whenever I load a game that has bezel or backdrop artwork, MAME displays a message ("UPDATING ARTWORK", I think?) while it's loading the art. Durign this time, most (all?) games also have some startup noise that they make when they're turned on. This sound stutters like a skipping CD for about 4 seconds before the game continues running properly.
Try playing rom galaga.zip for reference to see what I'm talking about.
Anybody else have this? Got a solution?
