I recently have aquired a working gorf cocktail arcade machine and am wanting to convert it too a mame emulator. I have all the neccessary hardware. Pc and such. Iam wanting to use an old keyboard i have. I just don't know where to start. :P
-
I'd start by saving that classic and not maming it. Someone surely would trade you a more common game for that.
-
I agree: this unit is fairly rare. Get another machine to MAME.
-
Is ther anyway i can keep the original as well as mame it
-
Where do you live. I'll bet I can find someone who will give you an empty unit AND some money for that Gorf cocktail. Tearing up a fairly valuable working game is silly, when an empty cocktail can usually be had for less than $50.
-
That's all i paid was $50. The guy told me the monitor quit working years ago. So i picked it up brought it home. After exploring the insides a litlle a adjusted the brightness knob and bam the video was perfect. :o.
-
Well, great. But you have a $300 machine there. You can still trade the thing for an empty plus some cash. And I can probably locate a buyer for you.
-
I'm in canada. If i decide to to keep it original how do i clean the insed or should i?
And if i do keep it i need new decals for the glass!
-
I am not sure if they make new Gorf cocktail decals or not.
You can blow dust out of the inside with a can of compressed air.
If you live in any major Canadian city I am sure you could quickly find someone who would bring you a nice empty cabinet, and hand you enough cash to mostly finish your project in exchange for that cocktail.
Maming it as it is now would just be tossing cash out the window. I don't even like it when people Mame working Jamma cabinets (because plenty of other cabinets get trashed almost daily, so why tear up a worker?).
-
Ok if i keep it the way it is i need help on finding decals, labels for around the controls which are not in the best shape.

Ok, those you can get. I thought you meant the graphics underneath the glass.
What you want to look for is a set of "Gorf cocktail control panel overlays", should run about $30 USD.

i do want graphics for under glass too

Exactly. There is never a reason to Mame a working game that is fairly in demand. Somewhere there will be a big collector who wants it, and big collectors tend to have basements, sheds, and storage units full of gutted games and conversion games (leftovers from bulk buys, etc), and can certainly set you up with a better cabinet to mame. (Those guys may not be too interested in just giving cabs away, but wave a Gorf at them and they will produce a cab, controls, money, and will probably deliver too).
-
In case you don't get my PM. If you live in the toronto area I will trade you the gorf cocktail for a stripped cocktail cabinet i have. I will even include a 15" pc monitor, two ultrimarc T-Sticks,and a IPAC.
-
Ahh... Do it!
But just make sure you do it so you can always bring it back!
Or... Better yet...
Build your own with the dimensions of the original!
Then you can use the monitor, Glass, ect... But keep the original in tack. Then if you get an extra monitor later, and glass... You can have both sitting next to each other!
-
I say Mame the Cocktail or Gorf Cab. I did and never regretted it. I no longer have to fix my damn Gorf PCB EVER AGAIN. Some of those chips are impossible to find and or fix.
-
If you mame it, keep it setup as gorf if possible. This way you can always switch it back to gorf if needed.
I kinda did the same with my cabinet. I mamed a Centipede that was converted to Sky Soldiers and kept the Sky soldiers board and electronics all in tact. I just added my computer and a 21 inch computer monitor. The old original monitor needs a little work, so I figured I would keep it and fix it when I get time. I can easily convert it back to Sky soldiers or Centipede, although I would need to get a Centipede board. I've also heard of people making their cab run mame and a jamma game with a flick of a switch, maybe if you're up for that, it would be a good option? I think the big issue with maming a classic would be if you totally tore it apart and modified the cab in a way it could never be restored to the original state.
