For those that haven't yet played this Lucas Arts classic adventure game, or for those that may just want to visit the fond memories of old...
It has been released on Xbox Live Arcade today, with majorly updated graphics and voice acting. (http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410995/)
Though I did play many of these adventure games back in the day, this is one that I never actually did play, so I am getting to enjoy this one as brand new. You can instantly toggle between the updated version and the original, and it is really interesting to see just how updated it actually is.
I'd say at 800 points ($10) this one is definitely a must have.
Here is a Gamespot interview that shows the comparisons between the original and updated. (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/adventure/thesecretofmonkeyislandspecialedition/video/6210375)
That vid shows an impressive difference, but with its low res and high compression still doesn't do the actual difference justice.

Sweet. I loved this game back in the day. I'm torn between getting it on XBLA or waiting for the rumored iPhone version.
-
You know, as much as I love Lucasarts adventures, I never did play any of the Monkey Island games. It's time I play catch-up.
-
I'll pop my CD in and launch it again with SCUMM VM.
Old Elaine was much prettier, despite the pixels.

That Gamespot video I posted addresses the new art style among other things.
It isn't just an update to the gfx though. There are some gameplay/control tweaks for a more console controlled experience and it has the Curse of Monkey Island voice actors reprising their roles for this one.
I can see the nostalgia factor leading one to prefer the original style, though I imagine anyone new to the game will have a much more enjoyable time with the update. The good thing is that you can literally switch between the 2 instantly on the fly. You can play the whole game with the new style and toggle to the old for your Elaine oggling. :P

So you still have to say "I am rubber, you are glue" to get further at a certain point? How awesome is that!
-
We just release it on Steam today too! :)

We?

Valve. I'm a coder here.

Just checking. That was the only acceptable answer ;D
Edit: Ahhhh, Gary McTaggart (http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,8270/). You've worked on some nice games.

Thanks! Funny thing is that I only really want to play old arcade games these days. :)

Funny thing is, I just fixed my computer and have been playing your games. :lol

I just got home from work and found a private message waiting for me from Gary. I won't reveal the contents of it, but I'll say this.....Gary McTaggart is one cool mofo! If any of you see him asking a question on here, by all means, ANSWER IT.

Sorry!! :) I'll play it soon and have something to contribute to your thread rather than noising it all up. :)

Too late. I already saw, and ran to the corner crying.

Wow, that's a name I haven't seen in a long long time. I can easily recall Charlie, Marc, Gabe and Doug. I even remember the announcements when Dhabih joined up. But, Gary McTaggart (http://valvesoftware.com/people.html) wow... that's a name requiring some scraping of ye ol' brain matter.
I was a HUGE hog of 3Dfx hardware, bought my share of Ritual games and practically lived under Valve's umbrella for years. You would think I ought to recall more names more easily.

I was still using a Voodooł up until the year before last. I hated that I couldn't use it anymore, but it does still work and will be in a MAME cab at some point.

I don't do much press, so I'm surprised that anyone has heard of me. :)

I just found this the other day. What a blast from the past! I'd love to get an SF Rush machine at some point. We had four of them at 3Dfx back in the day.

Yup, we've totally destroyed this thread.
Ummm, I guess I'll go download Secret of Monkey Island now. :)

"Members of the Valve staff come from numerous places around the globe, including Florida, Virginia, California, Washington, New York, and the countries of Texas, England, and Australia"

Texas may not be *A* country, but one thing is for sure, Texas IS country.

Depends on your time frame.

Nice new title for this thread. Sorry it went so far off course.

All is good. Except that there is no special message for Versapak.
Small community in this console section means that probably everyone that was gonna see it did. :)

I used to hang out with some major hardcore fans of Half-Life. At the peak, I had many GB of HDD space dedicated to keeping copies of HL and gaggles of mods and many burned CD's of archived mods. I'm as old school as they come with Half-Life. If your name appears on the Valve site, the hardcore fans know the name.

I still have my matching pair of Voodoo2 cards. Sadly, I lack updated drivers.
I had to put the cards into storage when I got a GeForce3. Despite all the stuff I loved about the pair, the GF3 spanked the SLI V2 cards on all the new games. On top of that, the GF3 soaked up so much juice from the poor motherboard, I couldn't keep it and two voodoos powered without having all sorts of problems. So it was either keep the V2's paired with the TNT or ATI Rage Fury and deal with sluggish performance on the new games or bump it up to the GF3 and drop the V2's.
Removing the Voodoos was probably one of the hardest decisions I made with any of my computers.

I never had dual Voodoo˛ cards, but I started out with a single, then upgraded later to the Voodooł. I guess it's just because those were the first badass 3D cards and because they cost so damn much new (at the time), that it was just hard to let go. 3Dfx really opened up a whole new world to PC gamers, but also did a lot for arcade gaming.

That they did. Damn shame that that what won them so many accolades from gamers is also what killed them off.
