Title: Should I base my build on a JK cab?
Post by: Kman-Sweden on July 14, 2009, 06:56:55 am
Hi everyone!
I can't make up my mind if I should go ahead and buy a used JK cab or not.  :dunno
I have not seen it "live", only got one picture of it. It's from the side and it doesn't show the lower part at all.
My main concern is that it might not look so nice when I put a bigger CP on it.
I'm planing a 2 person cab with spinner and trackball.

I need you input a.s.a.p.
I have a 2 hour deadline.

Thanx!

Well.. I tried to get hold of the the dude that's selling it, via e-mail, asking for more pictures.
No reply.. and now the time for the auction ended with the cabinet not beeing sold.
I think I'll build my own cab instead.  :-\

I hate to break it to you, but the time difference puts your original post at 5:56 am state-side. You're expecting a little much to get a response in that short of time frame at that time of day.

Having said that, Jungle King is a great cabinet. It is smaller than most though. Personally, I wouldn't recommend doing what you want but it is more than possible.

Had no clue what a "JK" cab was, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one.

And like shardian said, the majority of users here are in the States and most of us weren't around at that time.

Jungle Kings were in a standard "Taito" cabinet.  I love the cab design but I wouldn't add a giant control panel to one of those things.  Kneivel rebuilt a few of them and did a VERY nice job of putting 2P controls and a 3" trackball within the existing control panel area.  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=65678.0;all

Is this a North American style cab or is it different (many European cabs are different than their North American counterparts) ?

Oh, it's a Jungle King cab - I thought you were talking about a Jonkey Kong machine. :dunno

I thought it was Junior Kong, a Donkey Kong Junior bootleg.

Your right, it's a great looking cabinet. But still only 3 buttons.

Still while AMERICA was sleeping 22 people looked at the post.. And if one tries googleing for pictures of "JK arcade" and the first picture is a JK cabinet. Here's an URL http://www.pin-games.se/arcade/pictures/jk_1457.jpg (http://www.pin-games.se/arcade/pictures/jk_1457.jpg)

It's for the better that you missed out. You'd be better waiting for a good WDS cab instead.

What, I look like a guy that's not lazy?

+FU for shortening "Jungle King" to "JK" to ensure less work for yourself.

-FU for thinking to get people to Google JK and get them to work.

Finally, my thoughts on the cab itself: its' a good cab for single player action, dual if you cram them in there shoulder to shoulder, but trying to cram all those controls into a small space?  Just don't do it.  All-in-one CPs suck.

Are you looking to play fighters?

Oh holy hell bro you expect too much.  This isn't a paid advice service.  You post questions and someone usually answers them when they are able.  Posting at 6am and whining by 9am that nobody has answered your subjective question is a quick road to nobobylikesmeville.

I personally think Knievel shouldn't have put all those controls on there. On Jungle Kind cabs, the sides sit above the control panel. This means you can't angle yourself comfortably for more room. The screen is laid back too - which is best viewed when you are directly over top of it. Aesthetically, it is a cabinet meant for one person with centered controls.

And yes, your attitude is kind of stuffy Kman. Just because the thread has been clicked 22 times, does not mean it has been read 22 times by 22 different people. It doesn't even mean it has been read at all. Without a doubt, it surely does not translate to 22 people reading it that would have your answer and just chose not to give it.

Oh, and your link is not a Jungle King Taito cabinet.

An attitude like that will get you nowhere around here. Rather than Google it, because I wouldn't think "JK arcade" would pull up anything, I had to go to KLOV and see what games had those initials. It was only one, but you could've saved yourself a headache by just saying Jungle King.

Your expectations of an immediate reply, however, are completely unfounded.

Enjoy your stay. I hope you don't screw yourself out of more help in the future.

FWIW, I don't think that JK means Jungle King. I believe the JK that he is referring to is a brand of generic cabinet in Europe (like Dynamo in North America).

The answer to the original question is a resounding "NO!", which you would have gotten from me then if you had bothered to post a picture -- I don't run out and do random Googling for some random guy's benefit at 06:30.

If you can't be bothered to post a pic (or even a link, although pic is best), why the hell should I be bothered to figure out what you are talking about ?

MMM, generic European cabs don't earn Miss Pretty prizes. Most of them are rip-off designs from the fruity slot machines.
Think of something yourself or check the American classics from Atari or Nintendo.

First Jonkey Kong, or Junior Kong,
What now? Wankey Dong Surfing? A french Wars Des Stars?

It's funny ... when I see them I think of some of the early Atari's ... I guess I really am old.

I was waiting for Kman_Sweden to ask what that the hell that cab was.

To which I was ready to reply "frustrating, isn't it".

WOW! You guys know how to get fired up about nothing really. This isn't a US-only forum. There are a number of Europeans here.
When you go to bed we go to work. I never said JK was Jungle King, or what ever. CheffoJeffo was right in his post. The JK cab where built in Denmark and over here they are REALY common, and I was really exited about the cab since it was really cheap and there was only 2 hours left on the bidding time, with no bids. It was never sold so I emailed the person selling it and he said they had tons of stuff (PCB's, NEOGEO games and cabs) and that I should go there and have a look. There might be a way to build a nice CP that extends from the cab, to add room for player 2 controlls. Or I might even find a other cab that's better suited for 2 player games...

well that's good.. because those Taito cabs suck.. they appear to be made of cardboard and asbestos >  They soak up moisture and swell like a dead frog.. they crumble.. You work on one and you get all itchy like fiberglass.. and once you are finally good and pissed off at the thing you can't even get the thing to catch fire... not matter HOW hard you try..  ;D

Yeah and I hear asbestos is good for your health too... I wonder if it floats?  ;D
I'll have to make shure it's made out of something carbon-based then.

for real!  If I can help it I will never own or build another cabinet that's not at least made of plywood.. All that hard work just to see it crumble before your eyes.. not to mention the fear of getting lung cancer from the damn thing! :)  As far as classic cabinets go those old Donkey Kong cabinets are the best.. sturdy, light, and made of REAL wood and steel! :)
