Title: Linux distro for iMac G3?
Post by: Txny Mxnrxe on July 13, 2009, 04:15:26 pm
I have a 350mhz iMac G3 sitting around and I think it would be great for a bartop.  I would like to build this cabinet for my grandparents and it would only have a few 80's arcade games on it.  I do not want to use the Mac OS and Windows is not an option.  I was wondering what distribution would work best on it for such minimal games.

Debian will run it well, but the PPC version is outdated. If you have at least 256MB of ram in the iMac, then there is a PPC version of Ubuntu that is buried on their website.

What you talking about, Willis?

PowerPC is a supported architecture. Debian Lenny (released earlier this year) will run fine on the G3.

If you need more up-to-date software than the versions included in the stable release, there are also the "testing" (Squeeze) and "unstable" (Sid) releases.
