Title: Old stomping ground
Post by: mr_doles on July 11, 2009, 08:46:06 am
I just got back from vacation in RI where I grew up.  I had a chance to go to Atlantic Beach Park at Misquamicut Beach while I was there.  Used to have so much fun back in the day.  We got to ride the bumper boats (only group there) and go carts but the water slide was not open yet...my daughter was so bummed about that.  Also if anyone is from the area they bought the carousel, without the horses, at auction from Rocky Point Amusement Park.  That brought back some memories.
I passed by the old arcade and snapped a few pictures.  They don't make them like they used too.  There was a pacman cab tucked in the back corner by the golden tee and NBA Jam.

Did Rocky Point close down?  I used to go there Summers when I was in my teens.

Sadly it did in 1996.  Here are some pictures including after they tore it down (http://www.opacity.us/site58_rocky_point_amusement_park.htm)

Here is the worst part:
The park filed for bankruptcy in 1996, when it then auctioned off most of the rides. The property was bought by a developer in 2003 for $8.5 million, plans are to redevelop the park into a gated community. It is patrolled by a security company.

A gated community  :'(

That SUCKS.  >:(  I thought I might take the family there one day.  Not without a DeLorean.

Here's a picture of me and some friends standing in line for the Flume.

I wonder if my parents have any Rocky Point pictures from back in the day.  By the way I am lovin' the mullet, looks like the one I had.

Not a mullet.  I had long metal hair, but it was long all the way around, not just in the back.
