Post by: Pavel on July 09, 2003, 02:54:12 pm
Hey folks, sorry if im at the wrong forum, if I am can somone suggest a better forum?

Anyway i saw a few sites that show xbox to usb and psx to usb where all u do is cut up the cables and match the wires... well here is my dilema

So I guess...
White - White
Red - Red
Green - Green

Now what about the black wire and the blue wire along with the other 2 copper wires?

I don't mean to stifle your invention here... as maybe there IS a way.

But, wouldn't make more sense just to buy an adapter for DC -> PC?  (i realize you've already lopped off the plug, but still)

*shrug*

I think there is more to it than just matching the wires.  I'm no expert but I would assume something more would have to go into it.

Also...if you're going to use it as a PC controller, why in God's name would you convert the awful hand-cramp inducing Dreamcast controllers?  Convert a Gamecube controller for all the functionality in the most comfortable controller design on the planet, or at least a Playstation controller.  No other controller in the world (or anything else for that matter) has ever given me cramps in my hands or thumbs.  Abandon this project immediately!

Hehe.  I kind of liked the DC controller.  But then again, I don't think I liked it enough to want it to work with the PC :).

Sir, you obviously are too young to have spent 6+ permanent nerve damaging hours per session with those apparently "designed by sadists specifically for masochists" original Atari 2600 sticks, or you would not be making such statements  :D.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure one would need a special driver, even if the wires did  match up, which I don't think they do on the DC controller.

I liked the dreamcast controller too. I have big hands and those gamecube and playstation controllers seemed to be made for 10 year olds with tiny hands :D

That probably why I like the xbox and dreamcast controller. :)

XBox to USB via direct wiring is possible, since Microsoft went the cheap/easy developement route and used USB for their console.

I've never heard of a direct wire PSX USB, and doubt that's even possible since the PSX controller has nothing even resembling bus logic. Either the page you found is lying, or you're remembering wrong.

Forget about DC to PC with only direct wiring, the Maple Bus protocol (what DC controllers use) is very dissimular to the USB protocol, and you'd require a chip in between (programmed by you) to convert the signals.

There are two commercial adapters for DC to PC, if I remember right. The one I can remember is the 'Magic Box' available at www.levelsix.com , however, I've heard that this adapter has some troubles with analog.

the thing that you are looking for is called a Magic box. You may be able to find it for cheaper but here's the link. ($24)

Too true on the Atari 2600 controllers.  I've logged MANY MANY hours on that console, but not much in the last ten years.

I agree that especially the Gamecube controllers are suited to smaller hands.  I have small hands, though.  :)

Out of all the controllers I've used I've found the original xbox controllers to be the best.  I have normal sized hands, and I don't have fingers like steve buscemi (freaky long).  It makes a decent PC gamepad, too.

I played DC for 20 minutes one day and had NES caliber blisters.   :P

RE: Hand Cramps n Trollers.

Atari 2600 sticks: AMEN!  they didn't call it Carpal Tunnel Syndrome back then...the paddle trollers were just as bad.

I had a Kraft Analog stick that I added two more buttons and two more knobs to (also hadta change the cable) for my (cr)Apple ][+ system, I miss Dino Eggs.  Still have scars from the days of hand cramps...

Now I have a PirahnaPad, and my thumbs haven't been the same...tho after tweaking MAME to 6 of 12 frames on most games (half), I've noticed the feeling returning in my thumbs.

I played on a friend's DC and within ten minutes, felt like I had spent the weekend at both the arcade and at my 2600 non-stop.  whoever designed the DC troller must have had gorilla hands.  I've also been pained with the N64 troller, the only one I've played with that feels GOOD is the Sony PS (non-analog addition) troller.

I've also got a gripe about the Madkatz trollers, um, ya think they could make those d-pads just a bit SHARPER?!?  YIKES.

Back in the day, I've also had Pac Elbow and Defender Disorder, and all the quarters I fed TRON, I think that and Gorf were the only trollers that didn't leave me with numbness and pain.

Anyone agree/disagree?  Let the flames begin!

This does not compute

Personally, I use PS2 dualshock's with a convertor
