Title: wanted: interior pictures of arcade cabinets with a PCB shelf
Post by: krick on July 02, 2009, 03:51:29 am
I'm looking for interior pictures of cabinets that have a PCB shelf.

I need to rig up some sort of interior shelf for my MAME cabinet and I want to see how factory cabinets did it.

So far, the only one I've been able to find is Gauntlet Legends and the pictures aren't that great...

Removing the PCB tray...

Replaced with an ATX case....

Don't want to sound blatant, but it's a shelf. All you need is a board with enough space to screw your PCB/MAME rig to, either on proper roller runners or just on a shelf between two wooden runners so it can slide out, if you really need that.

Yes, I know it's a shelf.  But some cabinets have have them at different heights, some have backs on them, some have wire holes or air vents, some are on roll-out sliders (like you mention), etc...   I'm just looking for ideas before I just go and screw in a piece of plywood..   Honestly, it never occurred to me to put a shelf in my cabinet until I stumbled across the Gauntlet Legends pics so I'd like to see what the possibilities are.

Well if it helps, I'm just going to put a computer case with the panels removed on a piece of wood that spans the width of my cabinet. I'm not sure how I'm going to secure it down just yet - may just screw the case directly to the bottom of the shelf.

javeryh has some internal shots of his Donkey Kong restoration. You can see the shelf near the back of the machine. Just as Turnarcades had said, it's just a shelf.

I'm not home so can't take any pics, but I currently have a generic cab that has a pullout like a Dynamo HS-5 and I *LOVE* that design over all else.

Maybe a shelf is just a shelf, but the fact that you can pull out the shelf on an HS-5 without having to move the cabinet and without making the front of the cabinet look goofy (Berzerk?) is a wonderful thing. My brother-in-law has a GT2K that I bought him some years ago in an HS-5 and is the only cab, outside of my own, that I don't dread working on when something goes wrong.

Here is a pic from the flyer (well, the flyer covers a few models, but you get the point):

I've used one in a MAME rig and it was perfect for getting access, popping in a flash drive to update something, etc. Don't know if you could get away with a similar design without decasing the PC, but it is a nice design. One of the local collector/ops has a standing order that he will buy up HS-5s because they are so nice to work with.

I can't tell from that picture, but it appears that they have a hole drilled in the shelf and have the jamma harness threaded through it.  That's a pretty good idea.  That way, it doesn't fall down and get lost in the bottom of the case when you remove the PCB.

Yeah, the "shelf" slides back down into the cab on a diagonal from the lip of the CP -- most everything is mounted on the board, so you only need to leave some slack for the monitor connections and the mains power.  :applaud:

Last time I worked on my BiL's GT2K, I replaced the trackball, swapped the board for one of mine and switched out the PS without having to move the cab at all -- everything was available from the front. Took me about 20 minutes, including time to test the trackballs and PS. Was perfect timing as they were hosting a big party that night.

Someone here was working on some plans for one of these cabs, but I don't think it ever panned out.

I'll be back home next week ... if you want detailed pics of my generic cab's innerds (same basic design), remind me then.

looks to me like its parted and stapled to the board, which is also a great idea

So the shelf isn't parallel with the bottom of the cabinet?  Is it a steep angle?  I guess everything has to be really screwed down tightly then. :)  Being on an angle probably makes it easier to work on from the back too.

Is the shelf on normal shelf sliders with wheels, or does it just fit into a slot?

While digging around for better pics of the gauntlet cabinet and its shelf, I stumbled upon a copy of the manual...

Gauntlet Legends (27in) [Operation] [English].pdf (http://pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/ARCADE/A-J/Gauntlet%20Legends%20(27in)%20%5BOperation%5D%20%5BEnglish%5D.pdf)

Check out the way the back door is notched out so the power supply can stick out.

The power supply has an "auxiliary power connector" on the side (top?) that according to the schematic, is where the fluorescent marquee light plugs in.  The schematic says "AT Power Supply".  It appears they've moved the normal AT power switch onto the back.

There's even a special bracket for the power supply.  Kinda cool.  I wonder if anyone sells it.

Same type of supply that's in my Site4 cab.

Happ has them:

I was actually referring to the power supply bracket, not the PS. :)

If you look at my new guy thread I have a cab that the whole control section slides out like a giant tray or drawer I was told it might be PCB shelf. If interested I will try and get some better shots.
