Title: ARRGHH! I killed my MAME Cab! A word of warning...
Post by: JLR2000 on February 28, 2002, 01:22:45 pm
Well, went to swap out a cd-rom from my Mame cab PC and I fried the motherboard!  Poor thing wasn't even a year old yet......

I powered down, but I did not turn off the TV in my cab....I think when I removed the S-Video cable it sparked my MB somehow. :'(

The good news is that the poor poor young AMD Duron 750 is being replaced  friday with a new AMD Duron 1000!  It will be interesting to see if any more games run at full speed (MK3?  NBA Jam??)!  Anyway, as always BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR CAB!!

Game On.

I just installed an Athalon XP 1700 and there is noting I can't play at full speed.  It is very nice.

My Duron 1000 runs NBA Jam at 57 fps, S.T.U.N. Runner at 47 fps...  What is it about S.T.U.N. Runner?  That sucka uses some cycles!

Duron 1000 :D
512 MB RAM
64 MB TNT

I found that if you run Stun Runner in dos (pure or windows emulated) it generally runs at full speed with no probs.  In Mame32, I get it to run at full just by changing skip frames to 6 out of 12.  Smoothes it right out on my AMD Athlon 700mhz.

Very sorry to hear it, JLR :(

Since you have to replace the motherboard, why not go whole hog and get something nicer than a Duron 1000?
I too am using an Athlon XP 1700+ in my cab. Haven't actually hooked it up to the cab yet, but I've played MAME on a monitor and it's smooth as silk.

It's amazing how cheap computers have gotten these days. Total bill for my computer was:

$115   Athlon XP 1700+
$70     Shuttle mobo w/VIA KT266A+
$30     Case + AMD-approved 300W power supply
$0       "Blowhole" case fan (came w/case)
$0       Sound (integrated w/mobo)
$32     Radeon VE-based card (eBay)
$0       D-Link NIC (had lying around)
$0       256 MB DDR (swiped from other pooter)
$20     30GB Quantum hard drive (classified ads)
$18     50x Afreey CD-ROM (eBay)
$18     ThermalTake Volcano 7 chip cooler

...for a total of $303 for a computer that's darned near the top of the line for today, and would blast to smithereens the top of the line computer a year ago. If I'd had to buy the RAM and NIC, it would've been maybe $80 more. Just amazing.

Well, I would have gotten a faster CPU, but here's the whole truth:

I said I was swapping out a CD-Rom, well that was for a new AMD 950 I bought the week before to add to the home network.  So I just laid out the $$$ for another PC which I had to talk the wife into, and BAM! I blew out the MAME PC in the process. Plus I just upgraded my main PC's HD to an 80 Gig-er about 4 weeks ago, so the cash outlay has been kinda high on the computer front lately.  I'll wait 6-12 mos, and maybe at that time I'll replace my main PC (1.4 Thunderbird) with something current and put the 1.4 into the MAME Cab.  (If I don't "upgrade" it into oblivion first!) ;)
