But yes...the Taito Vewlix Type F cab. There's a black and a blue single player version called the Type L. Its sexy too.

If they weren't so damned expensive I'd have a couple myself.

Pfff , dont forget the name of this site ;D Just Build your own (http://www.flickr.com/photos/donovanmyers/sets/72157615957035070)

yeah thats donovan myers cab. I've been using his plans as a template. The only real differences between our cabs so far is Im using a different tv, and Im building the full CP, not using TE sticks like he did.
He did make a sexy cab though.
-
That was my going to be my plan as well. just build one long control panel, two SF TE would kill the budget for me, as I already have a extra 26" flat panel and a pc. Well I better stop drooling at this cab and finish the one i started ;D

The print on the flyer is a bit small. Is that a 32" screen?
For some reason - probably the name - I always assumed that the candy cabs were much smaller, like a quasi-bartop. But that's a nice sized cab. And the Vewlix cab is gorgeous. I can see why people like to build these.
-
candy cabs are smaller in the sense that they are mostly sit-down cabs. you don't stand and play. But a lot of them also have larger monitors. The vewlix has a 32" I believe. Others have 29" or 27".
-
Candy cab has become a generic term for japanese sit down style games.
This is the Namco CyberLead I just bought from srabelpawz
(http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a283/srabelpawz/pickys009.jpg)
Has 29" monitor (27" viewable) however it cant rotate the display like other candy cabs.
Despite the fact it has a larger monitor, it weighs 1/2 as much as the Midways cabs I own
-
Those Namco cabs look a lot more like the cabs I saw in the arcades in Japan. That Viewlix that Ummon posted doesn't rotate, does it? I cannot see how it would do that in the current configuration.
-
yep it rotates as well.

The second flyer image in the OP's post has the monitor shown in both Vertical and Horizontal configurations on the left side of the image.
It's a lot of work to rotate, but it does.
-
So it's not the press-this-button-and-BAM! sort of rotating monitor that's all the rage in the Project Announcement section. :D
That's very cool, however. And on a 4:3 ratio 32" screen, I'm not sure I'd be that upset with my vertical scrolling shooter being clipped on the sides. That's still a nice viewable space.

If I'm remembering correctly, depending on the model (Vewlix, Vewlix L, etc) they are either 1080p or 720p, so widescreen 16:9/16:10.
The one in the flyer posted is 720p (1280 x 768, 1360 x 768).

That would be cool :) It may be possible with something like the Egret II as it has a rotating mechanism. You could have some kind of linear actuator to lift the front open to allow the monitor to rotate and then automatically rotate the monitor before lowering the front again. You would just have to be cafefull not be be knocked out by the front opening
The Vewlix's are expensive but at least you could use it as a TV too :)
I'm picking up these two Naomi SD's this week, can't wait! ;D

and how much are those setting you back a piece Franco? And where can I get one? lol.
-
Well you know how much the first one was going for bud ;)
The seller finally got back to me in the end and decided to sell it but in the mean time I had scored the 2nd one. I got a good deal on both so I thought I would have both of them :)
-
Well feel free to box up one of those and ship it my way. lol.
-
very cool. but at what point are these candy cabs no longer cabinets?

Depends on what your definition of cabinet is. I love old-time cabs....yet, I would've easily welcomed candys, or something like them, back in the early 80s.
I notice that single-player cab's legs are shorter than the 2P above.
And, great idea building a copy. As I prefer sit-down cabs, that's another design to consider if I ever get the resources to build any.

I still think somebody would make a killing selling wooden candy cabs in the US.

Duly noted, though for the UK market. Been working on some more new designs (including a candy-style) as I think it's time we extended our 2-player range to accommodate a few more tastes.
The thing I find ironic about this thread is that usually I'm battered by the purists when I defend LCD monitors, yet it seems most couldn't care less here as this modern design has won them over. Personally I've never cared much for any of those candy-style cabinets as they don't look or feel like anauthentic arcade machine, though I can respect the play position, the clean finish and the weight/size saved with their design.
-
well...with the candy cabs....none of the cabs are really considered "dedicated" cabs. They are mass produced cabs that you can slap almost any game in. A cheaper alternative to paying for a full sized dedicated cabinet for every game. Buy 10 cheapo cabs....slap some games in....done. Not all candy cabs are LCD either. The Sega Lindberg and the Taito Vewlix are the ones I can think of off the top of my head that are..

The reason most here and other boards desire the Vewlix is the same reason we desire any cabinet. It is the OEM hardware for the game we want to play on it, or represents the best possible equipment for playing a game.
I want a Vewlix for the following games.
SFIV
Street Fighter HD
Soul Calibur IV
Tekken 6
Virtua Fighter 5
all of which were designed with HD LCD monitors in mind.
That's not to say that I wouldn't want to play SFIV or any of those other games on a Sony 34" XBR HD CRT inside some sort of custom built widescreen lowboy rig. :notworthy:
Wonder how hard it would be to decase one of these:

It could easily be redesigned for a CRT.

Don't. Build a pedestal for it. That's what I'm going to do with my Monivision, and remove the name tags. Specs: http://www.tronlink.com/dm5952sf.htm

Always the way to go. Why do a full de-case when it can be put safely on a shelf with the correct fixing techniques. The black plastic surround on most TV's means that when mounted behind perspex/glass and a bezel, the small visible edges of the screen are at least neat.
